Disappointment...

I'm disappointed:(. The deal on my project boat may be a no go. The previous (current owner) is having license problems. It may cost him more to transfer boat into his name to sell that I'm buying it for. I'm not sure why he didn't do this before offering it on eBay:confused:. However, since it was only $152.50 and is 470 miles away; I may let him off the hook. It may still happen. I'm planning on going this weekend to pick it up:D; but ready to accept that it might not happen.

Any ideas on what I might look for in a good project boat. I really would like to have one.

Re: Disappointment...

heck in Michigan I could show up to our DMV (secretary of state) with NO title and just a bill of sale and they'd issue me a new title without much issue. They just do a history check on the HIN...takes a couple hours but that's it.

Same with me in KY.
Go to your DMV and say you have had it sitting in your back yard for 6 years and they send an application off to Frankfort (our capitol). Doesn't cost a dime-only cost to actually license it like any other boat.

Good Luck!

A good project boat is free WITH title.
Its not always a smooth ride getting it re-titled, for all you know it could come back stolen.
I would not touch another un-titled hull again even if it was free.
Project boats are hazardous waste until restored or disposed.
Before you go take a look on craigslist.

I'd double check his story. It is possible that he was disappointed that his boat only went for $150 and is trying to find a way out of it. I'd do what I could to verify his explanation first.

His story is that OH requires a VIN tag on boats over a certain age. He claims it would cost him more than he is getting for the boat to haul it to Columbus to be inspected. He is checking on whether the inspection is required. Because of the long drive there (470 miles one way) I'm inclined to let him off the hook. I would be in for as much gas money as the boat costs. However, I'm still a little disappointed.

I would love to get some feedback as to what brands, types, etc. I should be looking for in a restoration project boat. Instead of just jumping on a dirt cheap boat.

DO NOT just jump into any "cheap boat" that comes along..
Thats what got me here in the first place.
I paid 200 bucks for a old 18ft tri hull..had a 165 hp I/O that endend up being rusted and frozen.
Had water damage and rot in the stern and throughout the hull..

My honest opinion..Look for a aluminum boat such as a Starcraft, with or without an older outboard on it.
If you look at fiberglass..take a rubber mallet and tap all along the transom and listen for changes in sound where there is water retention...test the deck, soft spots? If so a glass deck is a bigger job than some newbies want to get into...
Perhaps...as much as it kills you..save the pennies..study, read, learn up on different types of boats..
When a decent restorable boat comes along, you will be ready..

Good luck!

p.s. ALWAYS have a title....

Re: Disappointment...

Don't be dissapointed just move on. I agree with the guy's above Clear Title is a must. If you continue to look you will find one just be patient. My search began last August. After deciding what I wanted in a broad view. I seached. If this is your first Project Starcraft may be the way to go and there is about a kazillion post on this forum to guide you. Myself I found a Sea Ray (on my preferred list) It had the three things I was looking for: 1: A very good hull 2: a running engine. 3: a clear title that the seller had in his hands. I looked at every Starcraft I could find as I knew that would be the best to restore quickly. I preferred a glass hull and only about 4 brands and 2 hull styles. Patience was key. Some of what I found were tempting but proved to be to much work for a quick restore. These are my suggestions only I am confident there are many on this forum that will aid and guide you through this. Sorry the first one didn"t seem to work out for you. Don't give up

Re: Disappointment...

Well if you got this bat off Ebay the seller is required under the contract to sell you the boat no matter what the cost to him is. That is a real bummer man. Sorry to hear about this possible bad deal.

Re: Disappointment...

Wooster, thanks for the info on Regs. I suspect what he is lacking is the HIN tag for the transom. Still waiting to hear form him on his findings.

Thanks everyone else for the suggestions. I'll keep them in mind incase this one does fall through (as I feel it will). I'm still willing to hold up my end of the eBay contract; but will let him off if need be. I don't want to stick it to anybody.

Re: Disappointment...

My thoughts on this situation go along the same lines as Oops and others. There are better boats out there, you just have to look...it won't take long for the right one to show up at the right price and in the right condition. Once you start looking for a boat, you starting seeing boats everywhere.

READ THE MOTORS FORUMS. Don't get the shaft on a "great motor with electric shift" or some other motor with known issues.

"If I knew then what I know now" is a common phrase at Iboats.

Of course, if that were the case, many of us wouldn't be knee deep into projects and loving every second of it!;):D

Re: Disappointment...

Something dosnt sound right with his story! I have a feeling that he is trying to get out of it because the prices isnt what he wants.
I live in northern ohio and his story sounds like a load of you know what. First off Ohio has State waterCraft patrol, They each have an area of territory they patrol and they do boat inspection and sitations. This is who he would need to do any inspection of a boat. So I dont know why he would need to go to columbus?

Also any Ohio DMV near water does Boat tittles and tags and can find and vin number by looking up the hull id on the bow. AND if all ealse falls they will issues a new tittle with a bill of sale and mark it as home made run about.

I would move on to finding a new project!
