OK, bear with me for awhile........<br /><br />Have you ever booted your computer, only to get an error message, that Windows can't load? Perhaps all you got was some cryptic error message code like 0X000000CF8 bla bla bla??<br /><br />This can certainly make a grown man cry, not to mention the feeling of panic, knowing that all of those important pics and files are seemingly lost. Well , here's just one solution. By doing a bit of reading and having a solid plan to recover from a scenario like the one above, all is not lost...<br /><br />Planning for a 'event' like this takes just a short time and can save you hours of time trying to reconstruct your data, re-install the Operating System etc..<br /><br />Here's a free little program that can save your a$$..<br /><br />Get the program here: ERUNT <br /><br />Read the text file here: Text File <br /><br />It would not be a bad idea to print out the destructions on how to recover your system BEFORE something goes South.

I checked around some on this and it seems to be very good. Also Lars Hederer (author) has a very good rep. in the NT/2000/XP community. I will download it, but hope not to ever have to use it, at least for a restore.

I found The Acronis True Image to be the best back-up recovery going. It is not free but worth every dime. You will need two drives to make use of it.

I am using "System Guardian" Needs to have a totally blank, NON-FORMATED drive, but makes an exact copy onto the other drive, if one crashes, just boot the other one. You can also schedual how often to re-do the backup. Works GREAT!!!<br /><br />Craig

XP recovery has worked well for me but you have to be careful. I take care of friend's small business computers. I showed him the sys recovery tool and he began using it everytime something didn't work. One day his machine wouldn't boot beyond the intro splash screen. I tried everything to fix it - boot to last known good config, repair XP, and other things. Finally had to wipe and reinstall. I found through some research that frequent restores can slowly corrupt the registry. So use it sparingly. One good note is that I learned to use knoppix. He had some financials on the machine he needed desperately (in the middle of a closing) and they weren't on the server (bonehead!!). I was able to boot from a knoppix cd and copy the files before the rebuild. It is great to be a hero.

Automatic System Recovery is different from System Restore. With ASR you back up your system files and data files to a bootable disk. If everything crashes, bootup with the disk and restore the lost files, at least in Microsoft Theory. This is a last resort to use after System Restore and Recovery console.<br /><br />HeadHunt

It is really a good idea to keep you data in 2 places. An external HDD is an effective choice is you can afford it. I have an exact image of a cleanly installed OS stored on my external HDD. Additionally, I regularly back up all data (documents, pictures, sonds, favorites, etc.) to the drive. This also enables me to periodically reformat my computer's HDD when Windows starts to act funky.
