Disc or Drum brakes?

Hello all, I am ordering a new boat, 20 foot hewes. I have the option of Disc brakes or Drum brakes on a single axle EZ loader trailer. It will be a surge type hydralic and not electric. Which way do you all think I should go? Thank for the help.

Disk all the way. Easier to work on, keep clean and work way better than drums.

x3 disc if you have a choice. Just all around better IMHO

I'm a huge fan of my Kodiak surge disc brakes. Put them on a year or two ago and they've been great.

i can do a front brake job on my truck in about 10 minuites with disk brakes. i also know when they need to be done by looking at them. my truck is about in need of the rear drums but they are stuck on so i will need the shoe and drummy disks are just way easier.

Thanks guy's, it looks like I'm going with the disc's. I had surge drum brakes years ago on my 18 footer, but didn't even know they made surge disc brakes until I saw the option list on the trailer. thanks again everyone. John

If I was dark overloard of the universe, the first thing I'd do is outlaw drum brakes.

Our E Z Loader has surge/disc brakes. Work well !!!

The gurus say "stainless discs" if you're using the boat in salt water. Drum brakes are ok in fresh water...

As long as they are not the Titan stainless ones. Stainless does have drawbacks though. It doesn't conduct heat very well so they have a greater chance of fading.

drum brakes create a nice moist cavity for rust to start. not to mention the springs can be a pita in those things.

On my other trailer, a 26 ft travel trailer, about 8000 lb loaded, I was always nervous on braking the first couple of years I owned the trailer. I could feel the trailer brakes come on and help a little, but the truck was still doing the bulk of the braking. Then I put on disc brakes, and what a difference!! The trailer brakes alone could stop the whole rig! Fantastic!! Now granted, these are air-over-hydraulic, but the actuator was not what made the big difference. It was the discs...I'll never drive another heavy trailer with drum brakes. First think I did when I got the new boat last year was order disc brakes for it.

Everything about drum brakes is a PITA.
