I have decided to disconnect the oil injection system and pre-mix the oil & gas in my 1996 90 HP Johnson outboard, model J90TLED. I have had trouble with the injection system, and I'm not willing to take the risk of being stranded on a 100 mile cruise because of injector problems. My owner's manual is useless in telling me how to disconnect the injection system. I need to know what needs to be disabled, and how to disable it. I ran the motor for a half hour by just pinching off the oil line and running pre-mix. The engine ran great, but the alarm was annoying. Do I simply disable the alarm, or do I need to disconnect or jumper some sensors? Can someone point me in the right direction?

You need to do nothing other than run 50/1 as the mfg recommended during the break in that 50/1 along be used with the VRO for the first hours. Unplug the oilpump to get rid of the alarm which is in parallel with the temp sensor(s). At your convienence plug off the oil input to the plastic multiconnector as you take the hose off that multiconnector. You will note that this connector provides a connection to each carb, a primer input, and the one you will not be using anymore from the oil pump. Some models are slightly different and I expect some more good feedback from the guys beside my post. VRO is best described as a automatic premix, not true oil injection in the classic sence.

pkhiggins,Discnnection of VRO system is a simple procedure.

Disconnect the oil line from the vro pump.there should be a plastic clear oil indicator inline just before pump.Take hose off of this indicator leaving short run of hose from pump and plug hose off either using the plastic plug under your engines cowl or a (3/8 or 5/16) bolt shank with threads cut off.Install a hose clamp so fitting won't leak.

Locate low level alarm wire from vro tank to engine compartment and disconnct plug terminal.

Trace Vro pump wires to amphenol plug and disconnect to disarm alarms from Vro unit.

Locate tan temp sensor wire near top rear of engine and with key turned on ground this wire to engine block to assure overtemp alarm is still working.

Mix 50:1 oil in fuel tank .Remove fuel hose connector at engine and depress ball valve and purge fuel line into clear container until you can determine that premix is reaching pump.

That's it.Be sure and secure disconnected wires with tiewraps so they aren't just swinging loosely in engine compartment.

O.B. I like your MOP method of provision better than mine. I especially like your checking of the high temp alarms circuit to make sure one of us dummies don't cut the alarm wire entirely. One guy asked me once. You mean that alarm sounds to indicate that my motor is ruined? yep, in the case of t vro system.
