Disconnecting a VRO

Putting the final touches on an 85' Evinrude 60HP powerhead re-build.

I've only had the motor a few years, and the VRO was not hooked up when I bought it.

I'm trying figure out how the tubing was connected to the 3 barbs on bottom of it.

Unfortunately none of my pre-tear down pictures show me how it was hooked up.

I know the middle connection is fuel in.

According to this picture the front connection goes to the barb on the crank case?

The rear connection is oil in which is not being used.

Any idea what this piece is for? The metal piece looks like an orifice or something?

What should I do with the oil in and crank pulse connections?

All the electrical connections were hooked up...show I leave those disconnected or hooked up?

Appreciate all the help along the way guys.....getting very close.

Re: Disconnecting a VRO

Are you going to use this vro for oil mixing and fuel or just fuel only ??

Just plan to pre-mix my fuel the old fashion way as it was before. No plans to hook the oil back up to it for now.

Your pic in post #1 tells all. Just cap off where the oil line comes in. The other pic shows the pulse limiter which goes to the pulse fitting on the crank case. Finally disconnect the wiring from the vro and the oil tank. Don't forget to mix your fuel 50:1.

Thanks...I think the previous person just left the oil inlet open air, that was what I was struggling with. I had an extra connection there that didn't go anywhere. I put a new piece of tubing on it and plugged with a bolt.

The VRO acts as the fuel pump too, correct? Do I really want to leave the electrical connection un plugged? Boat seemed to run fine in the past and that electrical connection was not disconnected.

Thanks again for all the help.

Disconnect the electrical connection. It just prevents future problems. And the fuel pump is not mechanical.

If you don't disconnect the electricals you will have to buy ear plugs.

Maybe I'm going nuts here, but I do not remember seeing a fuel pump like this anywhere on my motor.

This diagram shows up in the parts section for my year motor.

Was this only on units without a VRO? or I missing something here?

Re: Disconnecting a VRO

The VRO works very well to pump fuel that is already mixed.-----Some folks install the much cheaper pump from 1983 models or from commercial models of your motor.-No wires need to be attached to the VRO when it is pumping premixed fuel.-----That was a warning system for a " no oil condition " on these.
