This might help... Looks like there's a large retaining clip on the backside of the panel. #13 in the Drawing.

I sure hope it is that simple...... if it is, I will be PO'ed that a little retainer clip kept me from getting as far on my project as I had hoped to be at the end of the weekend (I only have weekends to get-r-done since the boat is in a storage building at my camp). I wanted to have all interior out so that I can yank the carpet and get a good look at the condition of the floor. Thanks again for your help.

WOG, I ended up finally getting the thing disconnected this past weekend and during the process found out that the retainer clip you pointed out was actually holding the kill switch in place. It ended up being even more simpler than a retaining clip so I thought I would share the trick in the event that others run into this problem in the future. Turns out that all that is needed is to press in the button and shift forward as if wanting to rev the motor in neutral. Once in this position, the button goes into a floating position and can be popped out with the tip of a knife or small flat head screwdriver. Once the button is out you have access to the 7/16 nut shown in the pic you provided. Once that is removed, you can remove the shifter handle, remove the decorative panel and access the bolts that hold the two 1/2 of the unit together. Once again, thanks for your help and I will definitely have more rookie boat restore questions in the near future as I get my Coronado torn apart.
