Disconnecting the lower unit

I tried replacing my inpeller today, but was unable to disconnect the lower unit from the engine, I was only able to get it an inch apart. The long rod inside is still connected. I have looked around and found several ways to take it apart. Some say you can remove a screw once you get the lower unit about an inch apart and others say to disconnect it from the engine under the carb. I tried to disconnect it from the engine but could not figure out how before it got dark. What is the best way to do this and could you tell me how to do it? I have a 150hp 1996 Johnson Ocean Runner.

there will be a screw under lower carb or bolt i should say were shift rod attaches to shift link you will need to disconnect there it is a pain
get a flash lite locate the bolt it will come out the side you will need 1/4
drive and long extension to pull it. it is harder to put back i usuall put rtv in my socket let it dry to hold bolt in socket then i snake it in thru side
tape swivel so it doesnt move around to much and tape socket to swivel so that it doesnt pull off extension when you pull socket out after tightening

I am still a little unclear on where everything is. Is the bolt that I have to remove screw in to the clamp on a horizontal bar? Once I remove it, do I need to pull that horizontal bar out the right side of the engine (if you are looking toward the front of the boat)?

on my 140 I found it best to take off the lower engine covers
very easy to do
this gives better access to the screw that is under and behind the carbs
on mine you must disconnect it hear
with the covers off it made it easier to line it back up on install
