Disconnecting VRO

I just finished putting together a 87 40 HP two cylinder Johnson with a VRO. It's my first complete rebuild and I'm very anxious to start it up. I have two holes bored .20 over, two piston kits, all new bearings, water pump impeller, and a powerhead gasket set invested. I'm stuck on the VRO pump. I don't have a VRO tank, and don't particulry(doesn't look like a word spelled like that) fond of oil injection or auto oilers.
If I simply try to run the engine with 25-1 mix through the break-in then back off to 50-1 fuel what will happen? Will it damage the VRO pump? Will it run funny? I need a laugh but not from the sound of knocking rods or damage to a motor that I have my life savings invested in. Should I just put a plug on the end of the oil quick connect, right where the fuel line plugs in?
I've hear of "VRO disconnect kits" available from johnnyrude dealers, but am really lost on the subject. Something in my head tells me to just plug off that spigot and not worry about it, but I want to be for sure.
I also want to give a big thank you to all of those how have taken the time to read and reply to my past posts. Iboats is the best.

Re: Disconnecting VRO

It's best to plug the oil inlet to the vro as close to the pump as possible to eliminate leak possibilities. Then disconnect the vro pump wire harness connector to disable alarms.

Your break-in fuel/oil ratios are just fine and will cause no harm to the fuel half of the vro as a conventional 50:1 pumper. You'll also want to make sure that the low oil wire lead is disconnected at the engine as well.I know you said the oil reservoir is not on hand ,but just to make sure.Once complete, test the overtemp sensor for operation by grounding its tan wire while the key is in the "on" position. The overtemp alarm should sound.

If you have the original OMC side mount conrols ,there may be a keyslot under the fast idle lever, for testing the overheat alarm by inserting a key or similar metallic object. Not sure on your year model.

I'm hoping that you performed a thorough cleaning of the carburetors and or installed new kits.Sure hate to see that fresh overhaul go by the way of the "lean out" monster.
