Distribitor not going in rod seems cocked

Hi after repairing my intake manifold on my crate 714-907447A14 Merc SR # 92013751 I can't get the distributor back in, after trying all the methods on line .The drive rod has much play in it and I have the feeling it is leaning over causing me not to get the slots into the bottom of the drive gear , I bought a new Melling IS55E Oil Pump Driveshaft but looks like I don't have that type of oil pump just figured I'd change it threw the top for better support. I can't get the rod out with my needle nose, I am convinced it's not the oil pump with the drive shaft with the plastic coupling on it , from what I can see looks like the drive rod goes into the oil pump I have looked everywhere on line I am lost what rod to by , I was thinking to try to stuff may be bread in the gap between the rod and pump housing just to hold the rod straighter does anyone have a Idea what to do thanks Chris

Compare it to the old drive shaft. What engine?

That serial number doesn't come back to anything. I'm assuming small block chevy. The pump rod should work, it may not be in the plastic coupler all the way

Being a reman it should have come with oil pump and shaft. Why did you get the intermediate shaft?

In most cases you remove the oil pump ,then pull the shaft from the coupling.insert new shaft and new coupling ,snap it together and install the oil pump

You have to pull the pan and the oil pump to change the pump shaft. You CANT do it from above

I'm sure a proctologist could.

I do think this is the case I will just concentrate on getting the shaft into the dist. thanks Chris

You have to turn the rotor until the slot lines up.

Found the problem & I should of found it quicker!!!! it was my intake manifold mounted to far forward it was hanging up on the last 1/4 " of the the shoulder on the distributor from where I was working in the bilge I could not see it until I went to the other side my bad !!! lesson learned thanks guys
