Distributor bad to worse

I was in the process of replacing the coil in the distributor of a 3.0 when I couldn't figure out how to get the shaft and magnet out. Needless to say prying the magnet was not a wise choice. Bent that thing all to #$@&. So now I'm faced with either buying a new shaft and magnet or buying a new distributor. Can someone enlighten me on how to remove the distributor and or remove the existing shaft with bad magnet?

Howdy,

Most distributors have a roll pin in the drive gear. You will have to drive that pin out with a drift to get the shaft out.

You probably do need to be a little more specific on year, model, type of dist and serial of the engine you're working on.

If you don't have a manual, go to the ADULTS ONLY sticky above.

What's a drift? I don't get alot of chances tog et to the boat to take a look or try to break more. How do I get to this pin I see in the manual. There a hole, about a 1/4 inch, at the bottom of the distributor that may be threaded. Not sure if that's the way to the pin or not. Do I need to remove the whole distributor? Trying to just replace the shaft with the magnet on it.

A drift is just a punch - a tool you can use to punch the pin out. As Rick mentions, the pin is a roll pin that you simply push out. You can then remove the gear and disassemble your distributor. Do you need to remove the distributor to do that? Yep - it is on the bottom.

Thanks to all. The adults only manual helped out immensely also.
