Does anyone know where or how to get a new distributor cap for a 1979 Mercury 90 HP? As far as I know, they do not exist anymore. If this is true, is there aftermarket one available? Any help would be great. Thanks.

You might try www.ebaymotors.com as I see caps on there quite often.

Also check your local www.craigslist.org boating classifieds, likely you'll find a parts motor with intact distributor on it for less than the cost of a new cap, then you'll have lots of extra parts.

Note that any 90, 115, 135, 140, 150 distributor-model from around '70 until the last run of distributor motors around '79, will have the correct round cap.

Hard to say by the picture. It is for a Mallory distributor, but I don't know if it is interchangeable with the Merc distributor. I can see it has the side clamps that hold it on. My cap uses a clamp at the base to hold it on. If it is the same diameter and height, it could possibly work. I will have to see if there is one locale and take a look at it. Thanks

That's a cap for a Mercruiser Chevy Inline Six. Doubt it would work on an outboard.

Didn't find any used or old-stock caps on eBay, however, did discover that aftermarket caps are available from "Repair Inc", part # 994-4841. Here's a few places I found with lower prices for the cap:

http://www.glockworld.com/item/371224__Marine_CDIE_MERCURY_DISTRIBUTOR_.aspx

http://www.midwesthuntersoutlet.com/item.aspx?PID=371224&w=PQ+JDyOLrQE=

http://www.hinklemarine.com/outdrives.php?cat=IG

http://www.magemarinestore.com/cdimeredicap.html

http://www.blackbearsportinggoods.com/Mercury_Distributor_Cap_6_p/ellcdie9944841.htm

Any of the above are considerably cheaper than the last price (around $140) of the OEM cap, when it was still available.

It's still not an inexpensive part, but compared to the price of a new motor, a bargain if it gets you back on the water!

Have Fun!............ed

Thank you very much. This helps out a lot. That's the thing about boats and all recreational stuff, is they are expensive to keep up. Thanks again.
