Re: distributor question.
So now I will try a couple of lines at a time. To adjust, loosen the to two bolts just enough to let the distributor move. Push it in (front bolt is in a slot) then pull out firmly. Snug the front bolt and test: A .010 feeler gauge held like you are pointing a finger should deflect the belt 1/8 to 3/16 inch at the center before bending. You may need to try a time or two before getting it correct. Then fully tighten the mounting bolts and re-check. Sometimes the distributor mounts at a very slight angle and the belt will tighten when you fully snug the bolts.
With age, the grease inside hardens. To clean, remove the top pulley. Remove the large circlip holding the dist. into the mount and remove the dist. clean the bronze bushing and clean the aluminum dist. body. Lightly re-grease and assemble. Pump a few shots of grease into the zerk fitting.
Before setting anything, set the flywheel to top dead center. That way if the belt moves or you remove the pulley, it can be reset correctly. With the flywheel at TDC, set the curve in the top of the pulley to match the flywheel circumference curve and have the straight line pointing directly at the flywheel. Do this with the dist. at the approximate correct setting because the pulley will move about one tooth as the dist. is moved in and out.
