Re: DIY or Not?

100% from upholstery to sterndrive. Nobody touches my boat, but me.
...On a second thought I might let my daugter's bouyfriend to buff my hull one day.
And this is the only way for me to afford the BOAT, no substitute parts though.

Re: DIY or Not?

Pretty much all myself. Boat is new and under warranty so if it is a warranty issue I let the dealer do it. Besides that it's all me.....I arrange for the maid and I have to make sure she doesn't get in the way of the plumber or electrician and does things they way the admiral wants it done. I arrange for the gardener and have to make sure he is not there when the boat tech is working on the boat in the driveway. I have to schedule the auto service for the tow vehicle to make sure that the work is done before the admiral and I need to use it to tow the boat. I let the Infiniti dealer screw me on the maintenance to that vehicle. I don't cut my own hair but I have convinced the stylist to charge me by the number of hairs now. And now I have to re-read this to make sure my secretary typed it correctly. I guess I try to do what the feds can't......put America to work! All kidding aside, I am not the handiest person around but I try to do the small things myself (except with electricity) and leave the big things for the experts.

Re: DIY or Not?

I clicked the 100%, although in truth it is probably closer to 95%. I did about 3/4 of the upholstery on my 18-footer, but farmed out the upper portions of the back-to-back seats. The rest of the rebuild I did myself - including rebuilding the motor top to bottom. The only thing on the motor I farmed out was the cylinder boring...

Re: DIY or Not?

So far i have done 100% on all of my past boats.Including fiberglass work and paint.
I'm lucky enough to have been working on engines with my father since i was about 12 years old.I learned a lot over the years.
I can weld,fabricate,cut,grind or whatever..

The only thing i would farm out if needed would be machine work.

Re: DIY or Not?

I will do everything. I have the knowledge and most of the tools. I also use the expense of a shop to justify buying the right tools. Spend the money once, not I can do it the next time cheaper because I already have the tool...

I plan on learning fiberglass, as I have learned a TON on this forum. However, if I had to have maching done, i will send that out. But that is something pretty major and not everyone has the equipment...

When someone says 100%, I would asume that is 100% of the problems and repairs that they have had to date, or can foresee in the near future...

Since I do not foresee a enengien rebuild or head machinging in my future, I am going to say 100%...

Re: DIY or Not?

I have always did my own repairs on every thing. I am just a hands on person.
The only time I get anyone to do any thing for me is when i am out of town and things go wrong.
