Has anyone designed or attempted to build a transom mount assembly to mount standard steering systems like Seastar or Teleflex? The factory kits seem very spendy for what they are. I'm thinking a basic right angle steel mount bracket.....one that the support tube can connect to.....but as I ponder the whole thing I figured I'd ask....

One boat I had, the po must have made. It was Rusted badly, and left rust lines on the gel coat when I removed it. I installed the correct one. The steel one worked, but it looked cobbled. Now if you use a different meta, stainless for strength, and rust free, you might be ok. That being said, if you have an accident caused by a home made bracket, insurance might have a field day with ya. For the time and money, I'd go for a real bracket.
