Checking my internet connection today because it was not working. Looked up the strength of my signal and as every one around me was locked except for one its name was Dlink. Is this some one who did not name there internet connection and lock it out. Or is this some kind of internet error. Just seemed odd that this one would work wile my connection was out on till a couple of minuets ago.

Re: Dlink conection

I assume you're working from home on wireless? The Dlink connection is probably just as you stated. Someone's wireless router that they did not re-name and enable encryption (locked). Dlink is a manufacturer of wireless routers. All of their routers have a default name of "Dlink". Who ever installed it has the option of renaming it and enabling encryption. It's an unsecured wireless connection. Anyone with wireless within range can connect to the internet through this router.

The only unsecured wifi that i am aware of is down at the marina and that's about a mile away and in Alert bay but that's about 5 miles away.

Theirs no private internet services other than telus here.

Well there is a connection somewhere close enough to you, that you are sensing it..

Sounds like a neighbor got a new wireless DLink router and hasn't locked it down yet. My neighbor's SSID shows up as Linksys and is an open connection. Mine at home is an open connection but have it locked down by MAC address.

Unless you have someone that has software than con spoof your MAC address. Why not use WPA as well?
