Re: DMV Questions....Am I screwed?

My dad is NOT the registered owner. Since 1990 the boat has been registered to my aunt in NJ, and was registered (but not used) up until 2005 (she was paying for the registration, but not using it. Beats me). Needless to say I have about 7 years of trailer and boat decals haha. My mom is opening communication with my aunt, so hopefully it won't involve too much teeth-pulling to do it right.

My dad said that it "won't be an issue" because the "boat is 50 years old, with a 1980 engine on it" and "they won't care" (which of course will be bull****). I hope it pans out, and soon. Got my new throttles coming in the mail, and I wanna get it going soon. Fluke are calling! I hear them!

Glad it seems to be getting sorted out by a *less difficult* route. Given the age of the rig, it sounds like you might not have a lot of trouble. It will probably even be smooth if you can get your aunt's cooperation. Good luck!!

If this is a response to my post, re-read what I said. I'm aware your father WAS one of the previous registered owners, but currently is not.

The biggest thing IMHO is to prove to the folks at the DMV that the boat didn't come from out of nowhere (stolen, abandoned, etc). Your family has a long history with owning this boat, and I believe this works in your favor.

Re: DMV Questions....Am I screwed?

So, an update. After a ton of back and forth with my dad, and my aunt, turns out there is no title. My dad went to the DMV, and they said the letter and the past reg was enough to register the boat. I went up to the DMV today, spent a total of maybe a half hour there. The woman I worked with was very nice, and although I thought for a second I was not going to be able to reg it, she worked out the maze of paperwork, and I walked out with a regi and decals. This is a huge weight off of my back, although my outboard is DOA, so that's the next major headache. At least now all the legal crap is over and done with.

Thank you all for your insight!

Glad to see it worked out. I was pretty sure it would, but with these things you never know!

That is great news. Now get that OB running. It can't be all that bad...and there is surely ample help here on these forums with any problem you could encounter with it... :)

Glad it worked out. If you get the right person, it makes all the difference.
