Hi folks...
I've got a 1976 35 hp Johnson that doesn't seem to have an anode. There is not a recess where one existed, but I know there should be an anode somewhere. The engine is not showing any undue signs of corrosion at all.
I've looked, but can't see no anode.Maybe I'm in dufus mode  .Somebody please help !!

No holes anywhere, to bolt one on?

What's your trim tab made of (the vertical fin above the prop)?

If you're worried, drill a hole and fit one. Good insurance anyway, even if the outside paint looks fine.

nope no factory anodes on that 35 that I ever saw. sometimes you see one added to the cavitation plate. even the big v4s of that era sometimes had no anodes. it was sometime in the 70's that anodes were added by the factory.

Thanks for the replies ...
Now I have two questions;
* Should I put an anode in??
* Exactly where [on motor] should I put it ??

Roscoe,

Trailering, and running in cold, fresh water, you'd probably get away for years without one.

Berthing and running in nice warm, clear salt - bad policy not to have a good anode.

Local chandlers should be able to advise material and size. Both are important when choosing an anode, and depend on local water.

An easy way is to drill a hole in the AV plate and bolt the anode on top. If you want to be symmetrical, bolt one on each side.

Thanks ,stillfishing.
I think I'll take the advice and fix a couple on. The AV plate sounds like a good spot.
Am still at a loss why there was not one there in the first place.
Now,are you an Italian in Malta,or a Maltese pining for Italy ??....Either way,Grazie

Hi Rosco,

I'm a Scot living in the best boating heaven in the world (warm - 20 degrees water temp right now - clear, tideless, twelve month season), loving every minute because I test marine gear every other day out on the water, but still pining for my native Scotland - good whisky, salmon and reindeer steaks.

Grazie Hafna to you!

Well,there you go !
A Scot,living in Malta,using an Italian sign-off.Now I've seen it all.
The reindeer steaks sound gamey, but interesting.
I'll let you know how I go with the anode. A friend even suggested putting one on the trailer to help with corrosion.
Thanks again...

Hi Rosco,

I'm an anode freak. Can't get enough of 'em.

Good idea to fit one to your trailer. If you've got a galvanised trailer, fit an anode that has a high percentage of magnesium - it will corrode faster than the galvanising and help save your trailer.
