Do all small outboards vibrate your teeth out?

I bass fish motoring up stream with an outboard at idle most of the time. The streams are to swift to use an electric motor. The sound of an outboard motor running has never has seemed to bother the fish. But the main problem is “vibration”. I have been using a 1977, model # 10R778, Johnson 9.9 that I purchased new and has, for the lack of a better description, a suspension system that does a great job of off-setting any vibration problems and is very quiet. I fish about 100 days a year so this motor now has many thousands of hours on it and I would like to replace it with a newer one but can't find one that does not have excess vibration. I have purchased and sold a 2004 Yamaha 8 hp that did not solve the vibration problem for my use. And I have tried a 1971 Johnson 9.5, with only 8 hours of use and it also vibrates a lot. No dealer will let me try out a new model. Even though one can try out a new automobile or a new lawnmower or even a garden tiller. Go figure!
Question #1; which outboard manufactures of 6hp to 15hp with 2-cyl in a 2 or 4 stroke design have made an effort to address the vibration problem with the newer models, if any?
#2; how long did Johnson make the model like my old motor?

The smoothest little outboard I ever used like that was a mid-70s Evinrude 3HP, MT, but it was direct drive. It was so smooth that I could let go of the tiller and it held course.

Probably the next smoothest was an '86 Johnson 9.9 4 stroke. Used about as much gas as the 'Rude 3 but was heavy for a 9.9. . . about 107lb.

I think the JohnnyRude 9.9/15 2 stroke came out in the early 1970s and stayed around for over 20 years. A very good engine but not as good as the other 3 to 20HP twins of the 50s, 60s and 70s, IMO.

Boy Im surprised that any small outboard would vibrate your teeth out at trolling speed.
Im sure they all have certain speeds they vibrate more than other speeds.I would say try to find a motor with very similar demensions to your present motor, bore, stroke ,total cubic inches.same gear ratio, pitch and diameter propeller. If the new motor vibrates at your favorite speed try a different pitch prop to get the motor into a more friendly rpm.

mtcamp:
I had a Sears Gamefisher 3HP it ran very smooth. But the best small outboard I ever owned was a Honda I think it was a 7.5 HP it’s been a few years ago and I got that old timers thing CRS. It was very quiet, reliable and smooth. I wish I still had it. Mabee somthing is not right with the one you have.

Check that your prop doesnt have a ding in it. Also check that you have the same strength spark on each cylinder. At low rpm one of your sparks could be too weak and cause you to run on one cylinder.
Eric

I have a 1980 4 1/2 evinrude that idles, trolls & runs very smoothly. I always thought the 2 cylinder engine helped.

My 1964 Johnson 5.5 is incredibly smooth. At any RPM you can just let go of the tiller and it will stay on course. And I have the friction setting at next to nothing. The powerhead seems to be mounted in a way that it can vibrate and those vibrations not be felt by the user. Best $100 I've ever spent.

Just installed a 2005 Suzuki 6HP 4s on my little tinny and yes, it does vibrate a bit, particularly when it's in the "shallow water" positions. I don't think there is a lot you can do about this but if you find an answer, please post it so we can all learn.

If it's a single cylinder you can expect vibration regardless of brand.

"vibrate your teeth out"

Perhaps a visit to the dentist is in order. Teeth falling out from holding the tiller of a little one cylinder engine would suggest dental assistance is badly needed.
