Some boat makers claim that there boats are "FOAM FILLED" (20' < / > class boats, Cape Craft,Key Largo,Clearwater,Key West), pursuant to coast guard regs.. So does this mean they wont sink.... to the bottom ?? Will they really just hover below the surface if completely swamped ?? assuming they are loaded with 'normal' gear, cooler, fishing gear, anchor etc.. nothing that exceeds the weight limit of the boat

I suppose that's better than on the bottom.

At lease one, Boston Whaler, will stay afloat fully swamped with rated load aboard. I have personally experienced this. I drove the boat out from under the water and then dry.

USCG regs require a boat to have enough flotation to avoid going to the bottom if fully swamped. Many makers interpret this as "unsinkable" and play the "me too" game. Some, like BW, offer about five times the flotation required by USCG. Those I would truly call unsinkable.

Research such claims.

And, rebuilding an old '88 4winns, with rotten foam. the article I read about a boat is more stable (if swamped) if the floatation is in the gunnels, seems better each day.

That's something to think about seeing how I'm redoing my boat
