Do I grease the top of the driveshaft on a 1955 evinrude

Hello everyone, I am wondering do I put grease on the top of the drive shaft on the teeth as i call them (because there not like splines). anyways someone let me know thanks

I always coat the drive shaft splines with anti-sieze. Do not put anything on the top of the driveshaft, just on the sides where the splines are.

I would just stick with good ol grease. As stated, none on the top, or she may not fit right.

ok thanks guys. I am just going to use water proof grease! and yes I knew not to put any on the top ( I guess I should of worded this thread better lol)

I've always used OMC Moly-Lube. There's a story behind that but I can't type that long. LOL

Totally agree there, hard to get guys to go get it though, at least marine grease is better than anti seize

Agreed X 2 . Most good BRP dlrs should have acess to it tho'.

If you put anything on the top of the drive shaft it can cause excessive load on the bearings and gears in the lower unit depending on the lower unit. The drive shaft goes into a blind hole in the crankshaft and the grease on top of the drive shaft will force the drive shaft down when you tighten the lower unit bolts. Does that make any sense?

Make sense, I guess. Just figured any grease on top would just squeeze out when pressure was applied.

I've never put grease on the top of shaft anyway...was just wondering why grease shouldn't be there.
