I would say because the bellows is already full of water from being submurged and drips out from inside when on the trailer.

I am going to paste what i said above:

He has a rip in his bellows. The rip is on the side so only half of the water drains out. When he starts his engine on land, the u-joints whip up the water that is still in there making it leak out the rip.

Yep, since the rip is on the side, it will still hold water to the level of the rip.
