Do I have the right prop or should I change?

I just purchased a 92 Crownline 196BR. I installed a new 5.0 w/ 4bb. It has an Merc Alpha I drive. It currently has an Atwood Ballistic 17 degree prop part # 345132. I've heard these props are junk and the boat seems to be slow to plane out. It also turns 4000 rpms at full throttle.

You need to check your tach...or something esle is wrong. a 5.0 with a 4bl carb should do more than 230-240 hp...on a 20' boat with a 17 that should get 5000...seems that ballistic has some bite..:D

Your right though there not a I/O prop normally...thats normally...;)

imo,A 17 should over rev and approach close to 50.Without rpm and speed
can't really tell where the fault might be.
