Re: Do I have to name My Boat

My boat has had many potential names, but none that has stuck. We have had great luck with the boat.

When I bought my boat I took the name off the boat with no fanfare or ceremony and no new naming ceremony....Poseidon can kiss my ***....now bring a banana on my boat and you are in trouble.!

Re: Do I have to name My Boat

in my family we've had many boats (fishing boats, speed boats, pontoon boat). only one was named. my grandads home made pontoon boat. they all were ok boats with regular issues over time. none ever sank, though the two original (early 60's) wood row boats and the pontoon boat have gone back to dust.

i've had 2 jetskis, not named and 2 boats, both named. one is dead out of the water for multiple failures. they all were brought to light on the trailer, so i never sunk. my existing boat is named, so far it hasn't sunk either... none of the family boats ever sank either...

so i guess your choice...

my personal preference is to name it though. best not to temp the gods of the sea. but i'm more into boats than the family is... + it's fun to name the boat....

You should definitely name it; but make it something cool , inventive, or even shocking:eek:. Dumb boat (or car, or people) names drive me crazy (short drive according to the Mrs):D.

FWIW, I'd rather risk bad luck than Bad Judgement.
Don't name your boat after a) your Girlfriend b) ANY womens name that your wife might recognize, c) a mans name :)

Of course, if you take advice from a guy who named his boat "Wee Hooker", you deserve what you get ! :)

Of course you are not required to name your boat. As far as I know we don't yet have a "Boat Czar".:) Anyway- a name is handy if you do any communication via VHF radio. If you want to call a marina for dockage, or hail another boat for instance it's good to get a response that is meant for you. No need to put the name on the boat.
Also if you have an emergency you need some kind of idenification for any responders.
Good luck.

When I bought my boat it had a very stupid name , and I just took it off . I think it likes me for it ..... it's been the best boat I've ever owned , never let me down ! We just call it" the boat" and it seems very happy with that .

Very bad mojo if you don't...especially where it's cold and snowey and people don't move there.

Do you have to name it  ? No. Should you name it? Yes. I'm sure you will much happier when you are able to give the vessels name when you are calling for help on the radio. With no name, maybe only Poseidon will come for you  !

Yeah, name it "boat". Like John Wayne's dog in Big Jake, "Dog". I like it. BTW - your house sounds like mine.

Re: Do I have to name My Boat

I'm in the same situation. We all can not agree on a name. My first boat was "Why Knot?" but I never had it printed on it. I have considered "Why Knot 2" for this one. I have also considered "Dealer Visits" because I call on 25 construction equipment dealers. If someone calls her, she can say I am out on dealer visits. I have also considered "The Other Woman" written in Italian.

It was called "Miller Time" when I bought it. LAME!!!

Re: Do I have to name My Boat

when I got the carver I peeled "Patsy Ann" off of the transom.... you can still kinda see it along with another previous name that I can't remember.... I spent all summer trying to come up with a new name while running around in a boat with traces of 2 previous names on it...... hmmmm how about "posiden who?".... when I settle on a good name for the wellcraft it will get one.... but just because I like it.... not for some superstition...... if I get tired of it I'll rip it offf and put a different one on

Re: Do I have to name My Boat

Which brings up the point; I thought you can rename a boat anytime you want as long as it is out of the water. Is that the way the superstition is?
