Do I have Tru-Course Steering?

I have a '72 225 ele shift with a steering bar attached to my lower unit comming from the starboard side of the transom. Does this mean I DO NOT have tru-course steering? Good/Bad things about this set-up?

FYI... I ask because I was told when pulling the motor to be sure I did NOT screw up the steering cable. ($!) I don't think I even have a steering cable in my motor housing, and I am not pulling the intermediate housing, just the motor?

Thanks again

Matt

Correct, that is not true-course steering. And yes, the steering cable is almost impossable to obtain.

Be sure to block up the outdrive KS. There is a lot of leverage pulling on those rear motor mounts once you uncouple the motor from the intermediate housing.

Thank you for your response. Can you expand on any positives or negatives of not having tru-course?

Re: Do I have Tru-Course Steering?

Boomyal thank you. I am pulling the motor so I can change the intermediate shaft and coupler so I will be pulling the drive before I pull the motor so I can get the inter. shaft out.

Easier to pull the motor if I pull the intermediate shaft first? (seems very obvious it would, but wanted to ask)

One more question.. Since I am doing the gear and coupler I have decided to change the ball gears. Is the upper drive (leg) ball gear easy to remove and replace or is this more difficult then I expect? (do need a press or have to break the upper open)

NO! Pull the shaft prior to pulling the motor, much easier (pulling the drive shaft)in my opinion.

As far as disassembly goes, I'm not familiar with that particular unit. Mine is an '82 mechanical shift. Mine was pretty forthright in coming apart. Did you check your ball gears to see if they have a nut or are pressed on?? The pressed on are extremely hard to find nowadays.

As for the steering, tru-course is great. I don't believe that was an option back in '72 though.

Re: Do I have Tru-Course Steering?

Like Kagee said, pull the shaft first. Once you change the coupler, reinstall the engine before you reinstall the drive shaft. Just be sure that the coupler has the oring in it and that you grease up the shaft and the coupler before reinserting.

AHEM!!, I WILL TAKE THIS OPORTUNITY TO REMIND CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS THAT WE HAVE NO "ENGINE ALIGNMENT" CONCERNS WHEN KS GOES TO REINSTALL HIS ENGINE. :p

Kagee, all the ball gears both press on and are held in place by a nut.

KS, if you change the ball gears you want to be sure to put a sealant over the nuts behind the staked in cover.

Re: Do I have Tru-Course Steering?

UPDATE:

I went to the shop today and no engine pulling required. (so far) He pulled the intermediate shaft for me and the bearings were shot! NO OIL IN HOUSING! Splines showed some wear on them but the mechanic says "not to worry, just don't run all over the lake at WOT and gunning it out of the hole and I should be OK. (I sure hope he is right) I do have the pressed on type ball gear 1972.. yuk!

IMPORTANT QUESTION: Can I use a intermediate shaft off a newer model... bigger splines? The shop had a junk shaft off a newer boat and it was fatter and longer and the shop guys did not seem to think it would work with my coupler and he thinks I have to use a shaft with a press on ball-gear. Curious to get the thoughts of anyone who may know about this because if my racers don't come off right then I may be done and start to part her out on ebay.

Thks Boomer.. never seen a pressed on one other than pictures which made it appear there was no nut.

I am gonna say what you don't want to hear! GET RID OF IT. Those outdrives are more trouble than there worth. I had a 1971 stringer and it had true course, but after it let go and broke through the case I had it welded and bought an adapter kit, then put a nfb steering kit on.

THEY ALL PRESS ON KSD! You cannot use the later, heavier splined shaft without changing the coupler too. and the shaft has to be the same length as what you have.

I'D BE VERY SUSPICIOUS OF THE SHAPE OF YOUR ORIGINAL SMALL SPLINED COUPLER. IF THE SHAFT LOOKED MARGINAL, THE COUPLER PROBABLY LOOKS WORSE.

IF YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE SHAFT NOW, I DOUBT THAT YOU CAN EVEN BUY A NEW SMALL SPLINED SHAFT AND YOU DEFINITELY DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL A USED SMALL SPLINED SHAFT SO THAT MEANS YOU'LL STILL HAVE TO PULL THE ENGINE AND CHANGE THE COUPLER.

I MAY HAVE A PROPER LATE LARGE SPLINED SHAFT. YOU'D STILL HAVE TO COME UP WITH A COUPLER. If interested you can email me at "lockan@yahoo.com" . Also give me the length measurement of your current shaft.

ps, I'm questioning the guy's experience that you have working on it. I had to change my shaft and coupler to the later one. I had my motor out for a different reason and I was appalled at the condition of them, especially the coupler. Mine was a '75 with a 302 behind it not a 350.

pss, I think the shaft he has is for a ford, that may be what I have too but shoot me the length of yours anyway and I'll check for sure. Also I may have another source for you to get both the proper late ones-used.

Hey Boomer I changed both ball gears... neither was "pressed" on.

KS... Boomer is right... if the shaft has appreciable wear, so does the coupler. One more point... ball gears should be replaced as a pair. If you replace the intermediate and not the one on the drive, you will end up replacing both a short time later.

Does seem to be some confusion here Kagee. I checked the Seloc manual for units between '64 and '77. For the oudrive ball gear, with out specifying, the manual states "in addition to being held on by a nut, some units are pressed on".

For the intermediate housing, again without specifying, the manual states that " some ball gears are pressed on without a nut"..

No mention, in either case, why some are one way and some are the other????

Well, for my sake, I'm glad mine were not pressed. They were hard enough to do as it was. That Loctite retaining compound is a mother!

And yes, I filled both gears with sillycone before putting the lid on them!

My local OMC guru uses 3M 5200! Yikes! I told him he must be so confident in his work that he never expects to have to take it apart again. This guy is an old timer. He gets whole units shipped to him from all over the country including Alaska. He also gets repair facilities that ship him units to fix once they have screwed up. He knows all the tricks and secrets. He actually likes the OMC and said with a little improvement they would still have been a big player today. I shudder at the prospect of him retiring.
