Do I have wrong gear ratio?
Um, yes. You do. How fast did you go at 4100?
A 1.5 ratio is more suited to a V-8. (read MORE torque)
You could go to a lower pitch prop with limited success....
The problem is that the WOT RPM (about 4800) for the engine, also coincides with a similar most efficient RPM for the prop.
In the extreme, running a "VERY wrong" ratio which results in using a prop pitch that "works" prevents running the prop at
IT'S most efficient RPM.
Where you might use say, a 19P 3 blade to get the correct engine RPM (4800 with the correct drive ratio)) you would have to maybe run a 15p or 14p prop with a 1.5 Ratio because the 4.3l engine doesn't have the torque to produce that RPM .
The prop could be turning a LOT more RPM than it's most efficient RPM.
Turning a prop at a very high RPM (in the water) produces a LOT more drag and in the extreme will cause cavitation unless it's designed to turn high rpms (labbed props)
It isn't very cheap to do a gear-set swap. It's sort of like a complete rebuild since you have to check all the pre-loads (or you should)
You might consider just selling the drive and buying an SEI. you could probably get $600-800 for your drive (assuming it's in good condx), then get an SEI drive of the right ratio and get a 3 year warrant to boot!!
Now,
Having said all this, if you can borrow a 15p 3 blade stainless prop, give it a try and it might get you where you want to go .
If you're happy with the approx 35-40 mph you'll probably get at 4800, then you can stick with it......
If you continue to run your engine with a prop that gives you 4100 at WOT, you will damage the engine eventually.
(if it were my boat, this would be an excuse to find myself a 350 V-8 and swap it out!!!)

Rick
