I have a 1990 27ft bayliner with a single 5.7......i just got this boat and it seems like the motor is just barely enough for this boat...winter is coming and i have the oportunity to rebuild this motor and do some upgrades or go the big block route? has anyone done this?

You should replace the drive also. The cost will be a lot of money to put into a 20+ year old boat. I would relax and enjoy the old speed and think about the $10,000 in my pocket or just trade. Prices are great for a buyer.

Depending on how much you like the boat, there are a ton of options out there. If you aren't particularly fond of the boat, get another one you like better. If you really like the boat and want to keep her, then:

1. Go with a high performance rebuild on the 5.7L
2. Convert to a 383 small block (they have almost the same power as a BBC). Here is a great article on the process http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/383ci_chevy_small_block_build/
3. Find a "donor boat" w/ a good BBC and drive and swap over to your boat. Donor boats for pretty cheap money are getting pretty common these days, it seems.

100hp difference on a big boat is going to cost major $$$$$ and produce minor results.
