ok, i am a new boat owner.... i bought a classic with a 1965 johnson super seahorse..... the first time i took it out it ran like ****... wouldnt get above 1500 rpm... was doing like 10 mph....... changed the spark plugs and while doing that i found some cracked fuel lines... changed that..... took it out and she ran FREAKIN' great... for like 20 minutes..... i dont want to say for sure she was overheating but it smelled like ****... alot of smoke.... and she bogged down alot so i got worried and shut down.....
used my kicker to get back in and when i got home i tried to start to flush (was in saltwater) and nothing... still cannot get her to start... almost sounds like she wants too....

now she used almost 5 gallons of gas in 20 minutes....... plugs were fouled to **** it seems.........

i do not have the tools to do a compression check

can anyone help me please......if i can find a better running johnson for around 1000... or can i fix thhis issue for less?

could this be a coil issue.... or due to the motor not holding tune... or running to rich...

the ******* i bought the boat from said the last two times he was out he ran 50:1 fuel ratio.... that doesnt sound cool, he said someone told him it would be better.... i heard 20:1 is better... could this have helped cause the prop?

anyways please... any help would be great

Re: do i need a new motor?

the motor runs on 50:1, TC-W3 outboard motor oil. it sound to me that the motor is in definate need of a lot of deferred maintainance. it running great for 20 minutes says this. all hoses need to be replaced with alcohol resistant hoses. carb needs to be cleaned and reassembled with a rebuild kit. the water pump need to be rebuilt, with water pump kit. the coils may need to be replaced. i would start with the carb, and water pump. also if you are going to do this work yourself, you need the Johnson service manual for the specific motor.

To have all that stuff done in a shop would probably hundreds of dollars. If your current motor has good compression, it may be worth sticking with it and fixing it up. I say this, because if you get another used motor, chance are it's going to need much of the same maintenance. You should really learn how to do the water pump yourself and you could probably swap out the coils. Rebuilding a carb is something I haven't tackled myself yet. Mine needs it done and I'll probably have it done professionally this spring.

Re: do i need a new motor?

well heres the thing... from what ive read id need to have special tools to do the coils........
i have rebuilt carbs on cars... motorcycles.... and such... never a marine motor.... water pump is a whole new story.... i know nothing about it...... when it is running she spits water just fine... does this have anything to do with the pump.....? thanks again?

Re: do i need a new motor?

it is not that it is spitting fine, it is that this is preventive maintenance. water pump should be done atleast every 2 years. the carb is almost as simple as a lawn mower. you will not get anything for the currect motor in it's condition. and could buy one as bad or worse. that a little time and trouble shoot it.

buy the manual!!!!! there are few special tools and most can be worked around.

What size motor do you need if you were to replace it?

Fix what you have since you know it was running good for a short time. what's to say you buy another motor and it turns out to have similar or worse problems than the one you have. You learned a lesson that you NEVER buy a boat/engine without at least hearing it run or taking it for an on water test. You can certainly buy it without the test but it had better be with a warranty or the best you get from me would be near salvage value.

Re: do i need a new motor?

The carbs are pretty simple to rebuild.
That would be the first thing i did to it...under 50 bucks for the kits.
Just follow the instructions in the link Tashasdaddy posted.
If you can do auto and lawn mower carbs you can do these very easy.

Special tools for the coils? Are you talking about the pin remover tools?
I used a very small punch that i ground the end flat for that tool...worked great.

Do the carbs, fresh 50:1 fuel, new plugs and run it again.

pin removal tool? I am a bit lost on that.

I think thats what he is talking about...I made my own,it was easy to get the pins out..;)

Not sure if his motor has the plug with the pins....

i did listen to it run for a while before i bought it, sounded fine.... and earlier i stated he was using 50:1 and i started ti use 20:1, let me correct myself...... he was using 20:1,, when i found that out i started using 50:1 right away.

its a 1965 super seahorse 60hp.
how much would a manual cost?
not sure of the model i can go look though

and do i need a rebuild kit to do the carb up?

Re: do i need a new motor?

Where do you live.I ask because if you can get a good used ,preferably freshwater run 60-70 hp in the mid 80's to 90's with good compression, you will get much of your money back in fuel over the next 2 yrs if you boat much.the old dinosaur you have is not very economical, the eng I suggest is 3cyl.has a great history, great power and I think is alot lighter.it also likely has trim and tilt which is awesome for performance,i also believe you should be able to find one around the money your thinking. But,you will need the controls, which most people let go with the eng, unless they are buying another omc with compatable hookup, those controls fit many rengines and can be bought on ebay reasonable, another but, your eng may use older style steering, however, you can get a brand new cable system on ebay reasonable, makes life alot nicer.after new coils, carb kits, water pump, hoses etc .you still have a dinosaur that looooves gas and waiting for the next problem, the newer style ignition systems are soilid state,no moving parts, parts are very available, easy to install, more reliable.no brainer for me. good luck

Hey Guys.
I think you would all agree that without a compression test this is going nowhere. Lets see if the man has a motor that can be worked with.

Get a carb kit.

The manual would be of great help. Post up the serial number of the motor.

Re: do i need a new motor?

First the compression test.
Motor is one of the early V4s hp Better on gas than the early V 50s but not great.Uses either a belt driven distributor battery ignition or a belt driven mag distributor. some of those systems ignition parts are hard to come by and expensive.Weighs 225 85 50hp about 190.See if you can get it to run and trade toward A 80s 2 cylinder 50.or newer.
Probably get close to double the mileage.

Re: do i need a new motor?

i think thats the advice i was looking for.... i would rather have a nice reliable motor that starts everytime and runs good.....

and i tell you what... i filled that girl up and after about an hour she was almost empty... costs like 80 bucks here to fill both my tanks >.<

anyways i love my ol boat and id like to treat her with a nice newer motor but like i said im only gonna have around $1000 to spend.... should i start by hitting up local marine shops? i live in los osos bay, and right next to morro bay which is a bigger fishing town. ive already scoured craigslist... havnt really checked ebay yet...

thanks guys for all the help!

Re: do i need a new motor?

oh and i also forgot to bring something up, nothing to do with the motor itself... but! i have a smaller garage and i have to kind of slide the trailer/boat in sideways... one night after a friends bbq was a little buzzed and it was going to rain so i wanted to put it back in the garage and kind of slammed the lower end up against the wall.. well it only hit the prop... but it hit so freakin hard it chipped my prop really good... brand new prop.... but the previous owner bought it and said it was really hard to find........... i have the old prop that he spun.... if i did get this old granny going would it be easier to take the two props somewhere and see if the can rebuild them?
