Do I need a wedge plate?

Any of you guys that are familiar with the 4.3 upgrade using Edelbrock Performer intake and 1409 carb, is a wedge plate to level up the carb necessary? Just noticed the angle built into my stock 2bbl intake.
Thanks

I always thought wedge plate were for inoard applications, not I/O....
I'm curious to see the answer......

Other than a 4.3, what are you working on?

Re: Do I need a wedge plate?

Sorry I wasn't very clear,
1991 18ft Marada with 4.3 OMC Cobra. I've added Vortec heads, Edelbrock Performer Manifold with Edelbrock 1409 Carb. Looking at my original 2bbl manifold today I noticed that the carb mount base is angled forward to compensate for the angle of the engine I assume. Is this typical for a I/O intake? The #2214 Performer manifold base is flat. I'm concerned this will affect the performance of the new carb. I've seen some wedge plates for marine applications and wondering if I need one.

No, it's not normal. Sounds like a previous owner installed a wrong manifold.
The IO engines sit flat enough to not need the angled manifold or wedge.
Or someone stuck an inboard engine in place of a dead IO engine. Lots of things can and do happen to boats by unknowing oiwners.

Re: Do I need a wedge plate?

Guess I gotta put in my 2 cents, I have my intake manifold off ( 1989 4.3 Merc) I too noticed a a slight forward angle, the carb sits at a downward angle towards the front of the engine. Looks like it's made that way to keep the carb somewhat level and by the looks of the manifold I'm pretty sure it's original. Same part # stamped on it as Marada1's, GM 6269732.

In my experience; wedge plates do nothing except cause leaks.
