I am thinking of buying a used etec 150 for my ski boat. it's a 21 foot low profile ski boat with the original 1978 Johnson 150. I would prefer not to have the expense of changing the original steering cable over to hydaulic unit. I have been told that the newer etec might have to much torque for non hydaulic steering. Thanks for any input.

A newer 150 HP engine is going to have approximately the same amount of torque that an older one has. IMO, if you're happy with your current setup it should be fine. If you feel the need to upgrade you may want to consider the Teleflex NFB steering systems, I have the NFB dual cable rack on my Checkmate and like it (dual cable or hydraulic are used on higher performance boats to reduce the play in steering, which could aggravate chine walk at higher speeds).

Before you update the steering, check on some prices.
