Do I need isolators with BEP VSR?

I did a search on this but didn't find any definitive answers on whether or not the isolators in the wiring diagram provided by BEP are required.

Goal here is to use my large deep cycle only as a starter, and small deep cycle in the console for all of my accessories and have the small battery get charged. Motor is a 1993 evinrude 90hp.

I was under the impression that the point of the VSR was simplification of all the isolators, just having the start battery positive go to the SENSE pole and to the motor, and the accessory positive go to the SECONDARY pole and to the switch panel (and hooking up the VSR's -) and that's the end of it.

But then I looked at the BEP wiring diagram and it shows isolators all over the place?

Here's what I was expecting and from what I've read seems workable?

The grounds of your start battery and your house battery need to be common(joined). Your switches from the house battery don't need ground connected to them. Other than that , what you have in your drawing is fine. Basically, just wire the VSR between the two batterry positive terminals, ground wire to the VSR and add the ground cable between the two batteries.

The isolators mentioned in the BEP literature are just switches(on/off) to disconnect the loads. I always prefer to have a switch in there.

Blue Seas carries a switch that will turn both your house battery and your starter battery off/on and also allow you to combine them if you have a low starter batterry.
