Do I need this? (Transom question)

I'm replacing my transom and I have a plate on the outside of my boat that goes between the motor bracket and the hull. It's made out of 1/2" ply. Do I need to have that? I see plenty of boats that don't. The pic below is not of my boat but it's what I'm talking about.

a lot of people with aluminum boats use them. it's called a motor pad, to protect the aluminum.

Ah but do I NEED it. Say my aluminum is well past the point of needing to be "protected" :)

That pad just helps spread out the force and thrust of the motor. Do you NEED it - no. Would I have one - yes.

the other reason it is there is because two different metals should not be touching on the water.... it can lead to electrolysis issues, especially if it is in saltwater..... my advice is to leave it on...

Ok I'm convinced, I'll put one back on.
