Just wanted to know if I by pass the Shift Interrupt Switch wires and just hook up yellow/black wire. Will it hurt anything? I will put the switch out completely. It shifts in and out of gear like glass.

The shift interrupt switch actually grounds one powerpack, using the black and yellow wire.

If you disconnect the black and yellow wire at the switch and cap it, the switch will not function.

I was told the idea of the switch was to lessen torq on the driveshaft, many cracked and splines stripped in cranks.

Do you absolutely need it? No. It works coming out of gear so if your motor idles down like it should then you'll have no trouble shifting out of gear. If your motor idles even slightly high, then yes you'll need the switch. The undercut on the gears and clutch dog are extreme enough that they lock up pretty hard. If the idle is slightly high then it'll feel like it's stuck in gear when trying to shift out of gear. You'll pull and pull and finally it'll come out of gear and could go right into reverse. Usually right after you hit the dock.

When I bought my 150 the switch was missing but after I rebuilt it it'll idle at 500 or so, therefore hard shifting was never an issue.

Dhadley,

Cool. thanks so, much. Ya, After rebuilding the carb's the engine idle so smooth at 550. It slides in and out of gear like glass. So I will try this season with out it. Really nice to have one less componite to worry about.

Thanks,

Not trying to hijack the thread but do I have a shift interrupt switch? My '86 175 crossflow is a bear to get out of gear unless the idle is so low it almost stalls. Most obvious in reverse. It idles in gear at about 500. If I raise it a couple of hundred rpm you need a hammer to shift it. Stu

Stum,

I know that some motor were builded with out it, and that they have a kit to add it back in, because it was such a bare to shift out of gear. My 225 seems to work well with out it, so I think I will live with out it for a while. Or until I have a spare $100 to spend. LOL.

In most cases you should think about looking at the manual and seeing how to add one in if you have a shift problem out of gear. It really doen't help getting your motor in gear only out.

No worries about hyjacking the thread, the more question the more anwser. And that is how we learn.

Larry, I have the Seloc manual and it doesn't really go into any great detail about anything. If there is a shift interrupt switch it's not shown in the manual. I have a single stick morse control and the engine rpm's really drop in gear, and there is no throttle in reverse. Being able to idle the engine at about 1000 rpm will really help. Thanks again. Stum, are you trying to get into gear or out? The interrupt only helps out of gear, as for getting in gear. Have you checked to leight of the shifter rod? Also have you snyc and linked your linkage yet? Also it would help if you started your own thead, that way you have a fresh subject line. Lots of the old times won't look at these long threads.
