i have a livewell in my boat and it has a white plug in the back. ive noticed that water sometimes enters. i found a plug in the boat that fits the hole exactly. do i need to plug it? (the hole is the white plug) its not for the aerator thats a seperate hole. it has a hose that leads directly to the livewel

Re: do i need to plug my livewell?

There are a few different livewell setups. Not sure what yours has. Some have a drain in thee bottom that you insert a tub into that also acts as the overflow. Some just have a drain that you plug and a separate overflow. You already said it wasn't the aerator. You need to see if there is a separate overflow. If there is, then you plug that drain to use the livewell. If no othe overflow then it is the style that needs a tube inserted to to act as an overflow.

the overflow is in the livewell itself

It sounds like you're talking about the livewell drain. I'd leave it plugged whenever the livewell isn't in use (and probably even when it's being used), one less pathway for water to get into your boat.

Do you mean water gets into the boat itself, or just into the livewell. If water is getting into the boat then you need to check the connections between the through hull fitting at the stern and the livewell. Also make sure the fitting itself is sealed properly so water can't enter the boat around the fitting. If you have water getting into the livewell that is perfectly normal since, at times, the bottom of the livewell is below the water line and water runs downhill. Insert a plug in the bottom of the livewell, not the back of the boat. It would be a pain the backside to have to lean over the back of the boat to drain the livewell.

Sounds like it is water coming in just to the livewell. I am guessing it does not come from the bilge area, but direct from lake into the livewell. I use mine as a cooler and plug it. When I pull the plug it will drain the water our with the boat plug still in.

Per that picture, it looks like you are talking about the white hole on the left of the picture. That is not your main drain, since that is located at the bottom of the livewell. It looks like that is the overflow drain so I would not plug it. Otherwise you'll have a mess in your boat.

Mine fills up with water from the lake water when the plug is pulled. Then I flip a switch for the aerator and pull the plug back out to drain.
