I have a early 70's evinrude 65 outboard I was going 8-10 knots in drive and some one bumped it into reverse a loud noise cracked the engine came up went back down and was before I relized it in neutral I just it off and it never started again . the prop will not turn either way and because it is not in neutral according to the prop not spinning she will not turn over. I have what they call selectric gear box . is the transmission or what they call lower unit completly garbage now

The starter is controled by the neutral saftey switch in the control box, not the lower unit. If the lower unit is seized it might stop the engine from turning over, but the starter should still engage the flywheel. I would drop the lower unit and see if it will spin over.
By the sounds of it, you have destroyed the lower unit, you could tear it apart and check it out.
Look at the top of the page in the "Top Secret File", there is a list of salvage yards there, maybe one of them can help you out with a used lower unit.

most proberly the lower unit gear/dog shattered then jammed. if you rub your hand over the lower where the 90 degree part is you will proberly feel a bumb where the parts tryed to get out. its time to take the lower off to confirm thats the problem. if theres a bump theres proberly nothing worth saving and its time to find another used lower unit

Take the gear case off, tear it apart and then you will know for sure what is going on.

do the bolts on the bottem shaft take the lower unit out and do I have to do anything up top? and if I do get it to come down will parts from up top fall out as i take the unit off? and if I was lucky to find one which I think not will it just bolt back up there in place? thanks

Yes, if you find a used lower unit it will just bolt right back in place. Think of the LU as the transmission and just like a car, it's a separate entity all together. In essence, at the very worst case, you still have 1/2 of what you need in the motor. It's probably time to post some pictures of your motor & lower unit so people can walk you through dropping it. And no, things won't start falling down when you remove it. You need some experience dropping the lU as you need to change out the water pump impeller at least every couple of seasons.

You should also spend some serious time reading threads as there are tons right here that explain the process and with pictures. There's nothing to it, if you have even the slightest amount of mechanical ability.

Re: do I throw it away

step by step guide to removing the lower unit.
included is a link to a diagram for a motor like yours

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...65ES73R&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Gearcase

remove key from ignition
remove motor cowling
under the bottom carb you will see a rod coming up from the lower unit and it has a bolt that connects it to the shift assembly. remove the bolt (its a small 3/8th with a tappered end) part #100-#101 on the diagram
remove bolt #84 there are 4 of them 2 on each side
remove bolt #44 this will allow piece #43 to be removed
remove bolt #88
if power tilt and trim now would be a good time to tilt the motor to 45 degrees if manual tilt wait until the next bolt is loose then tilt and lock in postion
piece #43 was covering bolt #86 remove it (watch out the lower may fall off as the bolt is being removed)
once all bolts are removed the lower should be able to be pulled free.

with the lower removed all the way then see if the engine will turn by hand. if it does then the lower is the problem

ok its off and in my hands I dont believe it, the big gear thing at the top does now turn around. now what do I take this lu apart somehow ? and when I dropped it down a 2 1/2 inch plastic sleeve of some kind came off from somewhere it fell out when the shaft was coming out. thanks

Re: do I throw it away

the sleeve is for the water pump it goes on the pump that connects to the pipe when the lower is pushed up. being honest i dont think you can rebuild the lower as it takes special tools and know how and if the gear/dog exsploded like mine did in the same situation then theres not much to save so its not worth the cost in parts. the good thing is the lowers seem to be matched in size between years so other lowers can be fitted thus theres lots available. im sure some of the guys on here know what size/year will fit so you can source a used one. last one i bought i payed 150 then another 50 for a new water pump etc as that will need replacing on a used unit before installing it. if you decied not to repair it (maybe you have another engine etc) then dont throw it as the head etc can be tested then sold now you know its not seized.

Re: do I throw it away

I know about as much about electric shift as I do brain surgery, so keep that in mind. I'd at least have a look at the gear oil so see what started this problem. Are you saying you can't turn the driveshaft at all? Someone will come along that has electric shift experience, I"m sure, but do they need power to work? I'd think you should still be able to turn the shaft, unless it's rusted together inside the case from having no oil in it. You should be able to find a used lower unit for around $200.00 ish, which is why they're normally not worth the effort of trying to repair. By the time you buy the parts to fix it, if you can find them, you'll be over the cost of another one. Not even counting the special tools it takes to pull the gears.

I"d also make sure that there was good compression in the head now that it's apart. No sense in buying a lower unit if there's a problem up top. You can start the motor without the lower attached by feeding water in the tube where that piece came down.

Guys I know your busy but if you could find it in your heart to look to see if you have one I would lose this fear of never being out on the water again and thank you for the year ID ( 72). I put the numbers but did ask anyone if they had a lower unit they would be willing to sell me . Dead out of the water till someone has one , thanks for the time looking guys will just wait to see if there is one out there.
