While I'm waiting on my epoxy to dry for my floor on my Islander. I decided I'd change the ratty looking clamps and lines for my water seperator, that's screwed to the transom. Low and behold, it's rotted right behind the unit, about a 6"x8" spot.

Why, oh why, oh why, do people use non stainless or aluminum hardware, and then, NO SEALER???   Anything screwed into, around, near, needs to be sealed!!!

I'm going to dig this out, let it dry, and patch it with 2 part epoxy adhesive, with some cloth. Then, go over the top with a larger piece, glued into place, then thru the hull to bind everything together.

Although it's just a small area, the integrity of an otherwise perfect transom is in question. So now, I'll be replacing it within the next year.

The point of my rant (and thanks for letting me vent) is to DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME! A little overkill only costs a few bucks; a few extra minutes, and saves heartache in the end.

Can we add an "instant gremlin" for temper tantrums? I really need to have one right about now...

Ah, I feel much better now.
Rick K

...or just as likely leave it to the next unsuspecting owner!

Hey Rick K, I wrote you a note about your Islander boat, but it was in my thread about my project pixs, so I didnt know if you'd go back to it, so I'll write it here too. I was looking at your pixs and you wanted to know how to remove the lettering, if they are vinyl, you can use a heat gun to loosen them enough to scrape them off, and then use a glue disolver for the remaining glue. Just make sure its ok to use it on fiberglass. Then polish the area to bring back the shine.. I also wrote saying that you'd most likly be renaming her. Its VERY IMPORTANT that you go though the renaming ritual,or else you'd have bad luck the whole time you owned the boat. Here is an interesting site. BE SURE TO DO THIS.
http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/rename.htm

Thanks Mark... Looked pretty ratty in there, didn't it? All that's gone now; she's a naked aluminum hulk... The wife got the lettering off while I was tearing the floor out. Xylene took care of the rest.

With respect to the name - I think I have it: War Won See, the wife and I engaged in the fiercest battle known to man, since the dawn of time, over the boat. I already have two. Since it's in the driveway, I consider the "War Won".... Putting that name on there, however, is another story. Perhaps we should add a forum for potentially divorced boat owners... :D

You got that right LOL. Putting my wife's name on the boat along with mine (Mark's-Joy) is all it takes to keep her happy. And when shes happy, everyone is happy. By the way, how did she get the letters off?

That website is cool. I will appease the Gods and follow the ritual, to the letter! As far as the letters, I think the wife nagged them off. :D Nah, she stood there and picked them off by hand... I really wasn't even paying attention, but she got them off of there!

Now, check my post on transom repair - that, coupled with my rant about doing thigs right, should make everybody's day!!!

Thanks again
Rick
