Do It Yourself Carport (boat port)

Anyone know where I can find plans to make a carport-like cover for my boat? It needs to be about 6 1/2 feet from ground level, 12 feet long and about 8(?) feet wide.

Would metal posts be better than wooden ones? How deep in the ground should they be set? There are wavy fiberglass panels I can use for the roof.

Thanks

how bout the skeliton from one o thoes costco shacks. get some metal tubing and drive em into the ground,,,deep.
fit the costco frame over it and attach your pannels to that?

but as for plans...i dont know. but its a standard shed structure. you could prob do the plans yerself.

if you want to cement in the posts. im sure three feet would be lots

cheers

Do you want to be able to work on the boat while it is stored..... or is this just to cover it up? Wind would be your big enemy (as snow is mine here in VT).

Those metal carports are about $1000 installed (or less) and they seem to work for some people. You could look at some of them and make your own plans.

6 4x4's 3 each side. 2- 8ft & 2- 12 ft 2x8 to make the top band, 3- 12 ft 2x8 to serve as rafters running long wise. then cover with plastic or corigated tin.

set 3 post on each side with one side being 8 inches lower than the other. notch the top of the 4x4 so the 2x8 band is supported.

pm me with your email, i'll draw a plan for you.

Thanks guys

I was also wondering which would be better to set in cement, wood posts or metal. I think I will side with the wooden 4X4s.

The cover would be for protection and not a work area.

Treated wood would be best.
