Do most carry a spare propeller in the boat?

Re: Do most carry a spare propeller in the boat?

I used to when I had a single prop, but with the duoprop I don't.

Our lake is fairly small so if it were to happen I would get a tow in.

The only time I needed to change a prop on the water I did and then I found a bent prop shaft so I had to get towed in anyway.

The prop I carried at that time was a prop that was replaced and was just a get home prop.

I've got a SS prop, so if I hit something, I will most likely have to replace more than the prop. :faint2:

I've destroyed two SS props, replaced each one and nothing else. Depends on what you hit, where you hit it, and how fast were you going. If you're interested in keeping a spare aboard, get in the water (over your head) and pull the one you have, then replace it. That should tell you if the idea has merit. Or not ...

I carry a spare prop and tools. Also a mask and snorkel. Mine is the original prop in good condition from the boat as I got one with a better pitch for me.

I carry 2 spare motors, 1 gas and 1 electric, but no spare prop, unless you count the ones on the motors

Yep I carry a spare, same as the one on the motor. A 22' is to damn big to paddle, and yes I can reach and change from my swim platform. Won't say I won't get wet, just that I can reach it.

i carry a spare and its saved me a tow when i spun one. There lots of weeds where i go and i forgot to reverse and clear the prop before trying to get on plane so i spun the prop. I carry 2 diffrent pitch props one for light loads and one for heavy loads and i have the space in the back of the boat so its no big deal to carry one as a spare.

p.s you dont get in the water at the lake or a spun prop maybe the least of your worries.

.

For tubing, my boat runs best with 4-blade 17P. But for long distance cruising (no towing), the 3-blade 19P works much better. Using the majority rule, I install the best prop for the day - then drop the boat in the water. And, the other prop, wrench and board goes with us "as a spare"... Works for me...

I have a 35 hp and a 4 hp but I still carry a spare prop for the 35. Where I go in Canada, it's 11 miles by water to my favorite spot and 11 miles is a long ways to come back on the 4 hp. Would still be better than rowing though. Plus it's 55 miles down the highway to the nearest town where I could buy a replacement. If they have one.

I had a spare on my last boat (Alpha leg) but I don't havean extra $800.00 for a set of BIII props on this boat. I do have towing insurance though.

I carry two always. I bought another prop a few degrees different than the OEM one which I swap out when I know I'll have 4 people on board for the day. My small 15 ft rig can use the extra low end torque. The places I boat like the Hudson River, Lake George and Lake Champlain can have partially submerged debris which I've already experienced and partially snapped an ear off. I limped to shore and swapped out the spare. I carry a prop wrench, spare prop nut and washer and a few extra shear pins. And a spare 2.5 gal gas can in the bow! Sent the prop out to Solderbaums online and they repaired it for around $28 plus $10 shipping. Was nice to have that 2nd prop so no downtime while I was waiting for the repair.

No I don't, but it's probably not a bad idea. :)

rule it out as impractical to change out in the bay .... as someone said above would opt for Tow in.

I keep a spare one onboard, and changing the prop on an I/O in the water doesn't require you to get into the water. You just trim the drive up, lay on your belly on the engine cover and change it. Not that much tougher than doing it on land.

Well I would not want to do that ... as there is extended swim platform, you would have to lie on that, waves breaking over your head .. I find it difficult enough to find a block of wood to lock prop when changing when it is on the trailer - would not attempt it on the water.

But that may be just me.

Block of wood, jeeze - put it in gear. If you have that nut on so tight that you are concerned about damaging the trans taking it off then you have other issues to deal with.
