It's all hype to get you and some of your money apart. If heat build-up was a problem for the drive the manufacturer would install these things from the factory. The drive in a stock set-up does not get hot enough to cause problems.

I saw a device that splashes water onto the top of the outdrive (Alpha I) to help keep it cool while on plane. Do they really get hot or is it hype?

I have to disagree with you. Ever since I installed a drive shower, the sterndrive no longer has the white-ish looking deposits on the drive housing. Think about it, when the boat is on plane, most of the drive housing is out of the water.

Yes they get hot. The ones that make LOTS of LONG trips are the ones most affected or where the water is really warm.

You better believe they get hot, even my outboard lower unit is warm when I pull my boat out, and its been in the water for about ten minutes setting there while I go get my truck.
