Do riser bolts need sealant?

Do riser bolts enter the water jacket at all on the manifold? Do I need to put sealer on the threads of the riser bolts? Got it all back together, didnt do the sealant, and now I am wondering if I should have. Is it possible to get a water leak out of the threads?

Thanks-

No, they do not need sealer to stop leakage. But the sealer does stop the corrosion and rust that can happen (especially in salt water boats) and keep them from breaking and siezing in the manifold or anything else for that matter.

Nothing on the gasket dry, and nothing on the threads dry.

Torqued correct ? Followed the torque chart ?? A little oil under the head of the bolt to make sure it was a good torque?

Awesome, thanks guys.

Just out of curiosity though, do the bolts enter the water passage at all?

Dry if OEM gaskets, aftermarket............ Good luck.

Grease, oil, or as much as I hate it, ever sieze, (sorry, Never Seize) on the manifold bolts or studs will help to remove them the next time they have to come out to inspect the surfaces of the manifolds and/or risers.

Try a dab of perfect seal on the threads.... works great.

I assume that would be for the sole reason of corrison protection in this case? Do these bolts enter the water jacket at all?

I agree.

No way should most things be dry... Especially anything in the water. Lower unit bolts in salt are a PAIIIIIIIIIIN to get out if they haven't been coated with perfectseal.
Perfectseal is the universal answer on every bolt except for critical bolts such as head gasket, main bearing caps, and con rod caps....
Ever other bolt gets a dab of perfectseal.

Re: Do riser bolts need sealant?

I don't seem to have any issues with stuck fasteners on this boat, everything I have touched so far has been great, knock on wood. Its a 2000 salt water boat, but its been maintained.

So I guess the answer to my original question was- dont worry about the lack of sealer on the bolts, they will not leak water?

I pull the risers apart every year to inspect/change the gaskets, not really worried about the stuck factor, just the leak of water factor.

Re: Do riser bolts need sealant?

Alright, no it wont leak, and i took apart my first motor on the boat from a 1986 and it was used only in saltwater, and there was nothing on the threads.

All the bolts came out. I have used corrosion pro on the bolt threads and i chase the the hole.

Then i use a vacuum to get all the junk out. Never know whats on the bottom of the hole.

I also have used grease on gaskets. The new gaskets i have been getting lately come with a sticky substance on them already.

Never Seize will mess you up and i don't care what anyone says. If you use that you will be having stuck bolts.

My question for the original poster is, was there anything on the threads when you pulled them the bolts?

I bet no, there was nothing on them, thats why you posted the question in the first place.

Other wise you would have asked what was the stuff on the threads am i right ?

So thats why you got the reply from ME the way i replied.

Good luck !

Re: Do riser bolts need sealant?

Thanks. I asked the question because there was not anything on the original bolts, but I have changed the bolts out, and these have a longer thread then the original, same overall length, just more threads. That is what concerned me with the sealer- but sounds good, I appriciate all the input, thanks guys.

3 weeks till she hits the water!!!
