Do these plugs serve any purpose?

Hello Everyone

Pictured are two plugs on the side of the shaft on my 93 Evinrude 120. Are they leftovers from the casing or are they actually pins?

Thank you,

Please list the model number and year then we can look it up on BRPs web site for parts diagrams. Or someone might have a manual on that motor and do it the old fashion way (page by page).

If my guess is correct, from their position at the top of the casting, I believe those are the riser positions used in the casting process. Basically they are additional material at the top of the mold inthe casting process to assure the entire cavity is filled with molten aluminum and allows for air to escape to minimize porosity. After cast, the risers are ground off to near flush with the casting face. They may also just be additional material (bosses) to reduce local stresses in that area if there are load bearing features on the inside of the casting. Or they may be something else entirely, and hopefully someone with intimate knowledge of your model will chime in.
Good Luck

This the the Model number of my '93 120 Evinrude.

VE120TLETF

I also tend to think it is part of the casting process; however, I do not want to try to beat it apart if it is a pin.

From looking at the drawings of the above mentioned model, I think I have all the bolts out; however, the power head assembly does not want to separate from the exhaust housing adaptor and the adapter does not want to separate from the the exhaust housing. I am open to any and all suggestions short of dynamite. In my younger years would have been open to that.

Thanks for your help.

Can't tell what you have already done, but you will need to force the engine from the adapter. I believe there are 13 connectors total. Use the gasket diagram as a guide.

Hi Grits, I checked on my housing and it has the same two plugs, they are only on one side of the case, and it looks like it was just left there from the casting process. The hole on the left, directly behind it is the threaded hole from that bolt right there and the one on the right, behind it is nothing, the metal there is about 1/4 inch thick. Did you make any progress getting it apart? I can take some pics of mine and send them to you if that helps seeing it all apart. Bob
