This is a pre alpha outdrive do u think its rebuildable. By looking at the prop i think it hit rocks. I took the oil out and it was not milky. I just bought this starcraft im wondering if i should just replace the outdrive. I dont know what to do?

Well all I can tell is that the outside is pretty beat up from the pics. So is mine but not that bad. It looks like something took a bite out of the side of that unit LOL.

Did you ever try to run it before you pulled it? Will it go into gear?

Why do you want to rebuild it if it's still good????

It may look ugly, who cares, you worried about what scuba divers will think if they see it when your boat is in the water?

Put it on the boat and run it. Takes 10 minutes and a $3 gasket set if you do have to pull it off later.

If you are worried about the looks, you can easily TIG a skeg back on and also rebuild that chewed up side. Sandblast it, put a coat of paint on it, and it'll look brand new. Probably not worth it if you have to pay someone to do it though.

The prop can be reconditioned ;).

As for the drive, it can be pressure tested, but that anti-cavitation plate shape is not good, and in my opinion is the deal breaker. If the rest of the drive internals are good (which you will not know until it is torn down) then it can be a good source for parts in a shop maybe.

Well i figured that if it hit something hard enough for it to look like that than the internals could be damaged such as cracks to the inside of the casing. The engine has water inside so i couldnt really test. My question now is, can i replace the pre alpha with an alpha gen 1 like Truckers link??

If it is just a matter of the broken cavitation plate then there is no reason why it cannot be fixed. We had a fellow weld up considerable skeg damage for under $100.

Yes you can.

I wouldn't be worried about the conditon or look of the externals, but rather is it going to be possible to remove some of the components due to age and corrosion - without anything else breaking.

Having said that, I agree that it looks like something has been munching on the anti-cavitation plate. Do you have metal mites in your area? ;)
