I plan on setting up the downrigger with an umbrella at the end of the line in saltwater hoping to catch a few king fish, cavali or carite at the other end. Planning to rig the umbrella with some silver spoons. What are your thoughts?

Umbrella rigs have quite a bit of drag to them, so you'll need a heavy setting on your release. Most people just long line umbrellas with an egg sinker tied on to the front, which is what I would do. Then run a single spoon off the downrigger on the other side of the boat, or stach a couple of spoons on the rigger.

What size of umbrella? We run anywhere from small, 6" frames with 4 teasers and two baits to the large 20" frames, 12 teasers, 2 bait rigs.

They pull hard but they also catch big fish.

I got this umbrella. It's 24" from end to end. I attached swivels to the ends & #2 clarck spoons to the swivels. In the center I attached a wire leader with a yozuri crystal minnow. I got a 10lb weight on the downrigger dropped the rig down 40ft, my downrigger got stuck at 40ft so i could not get it deeper, I have to fix that. I believe I was moving too fast, 5-7 mph on the gps. Got no hook ups......HELP!!!

I don't know where you are at Highestgrade....but.....here in Florida we almost always catch kingfish in waters from 20' to 60'. I personally don't know of anybody catching kings in deeper water around here. We use live bait.

Good Luck!

Re: Do umbrellas really work?

I'm located in Trinidad. Maybe I just need a little luck. Hopefully next time I go out i'll catch one. I'm using lures because I don't have a live bait well..yet..so what do you guys think of my umbrella with spoons & stinger yozuri?
