is it necessary to apply a sealant to new gaskets before putting them in place? I am replacing my water pump and have never done this procedure before.

Usually no, but some Mercs use a single bead of sealant along the exhaust housing. Use a service manual to make sure you get it right the first time.

As a rule, new gaskets and good mating surfaces don't require sealants. They're mostly for compromised sealing surfaces, and the occasional unavoidable reuse of a gasket that is in otherwise decent condition. Naturally there are exceptions. Whatcha Got???

If it ain't been cooked and you are using ORIGINAL Merc gaskets put them on dry, do not over torque. Keep everything clean.

Great.. I am using brand new gaskets that I got with the water pump kit (Quicksilver) from the Merc Dealer. Ive cleaned everything real good and will go for it. Thanks all for your input.

As I said, check the manual and see if you need a bead of sealant along the exhaust housing, otherwise you'll be doing it again real soon!
