I don't want to say. You might not agree with me or think well of me.

You are really in the majority of people, when it comes to interacting, more than you may think.

Try to hunt up a copy of the book "How to Win Friends and Influence People", by Dale Carnegie. In additon to the book, he also featured seminars to practice interaction techniques, back in the day.

It's a great read on the inner workings of human interaction, both socially and professionally.

It's insight is as pertitent today, as when it was first written in 1936.

Seems to me, every time they invent a new drug, they invent a new condition to treat with it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this type of behavior at all personally.
I think it is uncommon to feel comfortable in talking with and addressing larger crowds of people. Most people....by a very big majority are not comfortable with it. Use the average wedding as an example. How many people stand up out of say...150 and actually call everyone to order for a toast or equivalent. Most people are not comfortable with it. I have felt this way many times during large weddings, get togethers, etc. I always admire that people that do it. That said, I have stepped up at times myself but in my opinion...not enough.
That said, the only way to overcome this fear is to practice socializing. If you absolutely had to address a group of people (say 50) constantly a few times a day for 1-2 weeks. By the end of it you would probably think it routine. After that the memory of your behavior would probably make it an easier situation the next time it arose. Your fear would be substantially smaller.
They say you should always try to do things you typically fear. Whether thats going to an interview or talking with people or situations you normally might shy away from....or whatever.
When you get older you can start developing the idea that 'change is bad and the same is good'. This is a fallacy and a recipe for a lot of failures in my opinion.
I can usually tell what I should be doing my often my pre-disposition to Anywhooo, my two and three cents

There are many things which can cause this feeling. Agrophobia is one which today is very treatable. Be very careful that you dont drink alcohol often when you are by yourself. this can lead to alcoholism. You need to mingle in low stress situations with others. Try church,or some club that has regular meetings first before you diagnose yourself with a serious mental condition.

I'm pretty sure I have some level of social anxiety too, wildmaninal. I don't think it's necessarily an unhealthy thing as long as the symptoms are mild, and if you didn't have any idea prior to hearing about it, then I'd say odds are your symptoms are mild.

With my level of anxiety, I don't have much difficulty interviewing or communicating face to face, but I REALLY dislike being in crowds or in traffic. Maybe it's just people getting in my way that I have a problem with... I wonder what the disorder name for that is.

Wild got banned? What the heck? I always thought he was one of the decent guys. I mean I'm sure he did something to deserve it, but that just blows my mind.

Maybe it was new years eve and he got sloshed and said some things he wouldn't have otherwise said... wouldn't be the first time that's ever happened.

Re: Do you believe in Social anxiety, anybody have it?

Social anxiety is a very real afflication. I can tell you as a child, I could not answer the phone, walk into restaurants or stores alone or communicate with strangers at all. For me it stemmed from living through some very difficult issues at an early age.

I can remember taking a job in advertising in my early 20's and sitting in the car crying in fear. All I had to do is enter the store and ask the owner to run an ad. I did it but things like that would make me have a physical reaction as well as an emotional reaction. I had to force myself out of my comfort zone time after time until it was easier.

I then went to work selling newspaper advertising, then on to giving pre-show speeches to 1,700 people at a broadway musical theatre, then on to being an executive where public speaking is still my number one responsibility.

I no longer suffer the physical and emotional reaction and to be quite honest, I rather enjoy being the center of attention. I even connieokee sometimes, thats right, I've created my own monster. lol ;)

The only way to cure social anxiety for me was to get out there and face my fears, it gets a little easier every time.

Good luck.

Re: Do you believe in Social anxiety, anybody have it?

I guess I like to get out of my area once and awhile because it allows me to open up and be myself. In the rural area and small towns I live near it's tough to not get a certain reputation and then everyone expects you to act a certain way and do certain things.

On the 1'st I went with some crazy friends to a wall mart 50 miles from here. They were fallowing me around the store acting silly. Telling me to get hit on certain woman for example. Even though it was a little scary it wasn't too bad because no one in that town knew who we were and were not expecting a certain um.... social ....perfection from me. No that's not it. I mean I was not expected to conform in a certain way like I would in my home town where they knew me. I have more fun in the summer when I can get away in my camper and socialize with new people that don't know me.

Hey what did I miss? Does anyone have an abridged version of what maninal said to get booted? Seems completely out of character but at the same time I dont think the mods toss people out without good reason. I dont know why I have a need to know but I sure am curious.

What a lot of posts on an unusual topic! My take: People with social anxiety are likely to take up fishing!
