I carry a leatherman tool, some ty-raps, and a roll of tape. Also do a lot of preventive maintenance. One no start condition in 50 years, and that was at the boat launch.

Re: Do you carry tools and spare parts?

I like to do a lot of river boating and tend to always be prepared.

A few screwdrivers
A cheap variety set of wrenches from harbor freight
Standard wrench set
Points and condenser kit
Two jumper wires (wire with alligator clips on ends)
1/2" breaker bar w/ big socket for prop
Spare prop w/ all hardware (prop nut, thrust washer, castle nut, lock washer)
Distributor wrench
Test light
Electrical tape
Duct tape
Extra drain plug
Ski rope or mooring lines can be used towing
100' and 50' sections of 7/16 line
1 quart motol oil
Spare fuses
Spare belt (old belt that was replaced, but still serviceable)

The following items that I carry in my truck and put in boat when using:
Big sockets set in case (1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive)
25ft 8 gauge jumper cables

I think that's everything, but there's probably more.... lol

I think it's irresponsible to not have at least a tool kit and some kind of assortment of spare parts (plugs, belts, filters). As well as maybe jumper cables. But as far as doing major surgery on the water no thanks, I carry paddles (4 of them to standard wood ones in the ski locker and 2 collapsible ones) and I have a cell phone. Plus I usually boat on smaller local lakes. I think that covers it.

IF I was on say lake superior or a river with heavy current, I might have a different answer.

True. I go out 20+ miles away from shore so I like to be more prepared. I also trailer my boat 500 miles from my home on vacations often, so it's nice having more tools with me.

Adding to my list, I carry a Fluke DVM that always stays in the boat as well. That tool has come in handy the most.

I carry a full set of tools, spare prop, hardware, specialty tools I think I'll need, electrical repair kit, etc...

What I do carry that most people don't is a spare STARTER. I believe it's a must for an I/O boat that you take long distances.

That's a pretty big part to lug around.

But hey you ain't gonna wrap a pull rope around a 3+ litter 4 stroke.... I can start my VW that way though

My dad used to carry a spare starter, alternator, fuel pump and raw water pump but he used to cruise from Canada into Alaska and had a 28' boat so there was a lot of room.
