Re: Do You Collect Anything?
When I was a kid on the rosebud reservation in SD, we were just south of ST. Francis Mission I collected arrowheads and spearheads. The newer ones were pipestone, older ones flint. If you look close you can tell which one was used for what. This area I was in was the last of the battlegrounds. You would find them easily on prairie dog holes and washouts.
An old indian man we used to rent ground from, he was close to 100 back in the 70's when I was a kid. He said that the Souix never made arrowheads. He said the spiders made them. To explain he said they would walk the area looking for wolf spider holes. As the spiders dug out their holes they would shove pebbles and other things to the surface, including arrowheads. This is why they said the spiders made them. The arrowheads were actually made by tribes that were there before the Souix, those the Souix drove out when they moved in. Other animals also made arrowheads and spearheads for them, badgers, foxes, coyotes, any digging animal or bug.
Back on topic, I had over 200 arrowheads but when I moved I left them with my uncle. He was making a display case, but I think my cousin decided they were his and took them.
