Do you enjoy boating as much after restoration?

In the past, I was always very concerned and careful not to dock too quickly or do anything inside or out that might put a scratch or scuff on my baby. I didn't have to restore anything because I kept it up pretty well. G-d forbid anyone should want to fish out of her or do anything to mar my pride and joy.

Recently, I bought a 1983 16ft Invader with a Volvo Penta I/O for $400 that had been sitting outside for 4 years and I was going to restore her. After changing the oils and replacing the impeller and exhaust bellows, I took her out. She ran like a champ.

The interesting thing is that I found her to be more fun than my past boats because, to tell the truth, I didn't care how I docked her or put her on or off the trailer or even if I spilled something inside. It was a gas no longer being anal about it's appearance. She was already scuffed and scratched. The vinyl interior sides and trim were already cracked and had some tears. I'm even thinking about going fishing in her and I don't even like fishing.

So the sum total of my interior and exterior restoration plan now is to replace the seats, tear out the carpets and put down a rubberized non skid washable floor paint. I might, however clean the outside with Poli-Glow to get rid of the oxidized orange exterior, but the scratches and scuffs will remain.

So I guess my question to you who have done a total restoration is, do you still have as much fun with your restored baby? How do you treat friends and family when they're on you boat? Do you find yourself not enjoying yourself as much because you're afraid of ruining your labor of love or do you just run it like always?

Re: Do you enjoy boating as much after restoration?

I can't quite relate because my project was not an appearance build but a functional build. What I can say is I am a little more hesitant to do certain things. For one thing, I made it clear right off the bat to anyone who knows me that it is a fishing rig, and there will be no rides, skiing, cruises, none of it. The wife is the only exception, we do our own thing. Everyone else can go get their own damn boat. Why am I like this? I am not sure, there is nothing anyone can do to make my boat any uglier. I guess in my mind, none of them where there when I was all itchy with fiberglass, so they don't get to reap any benefits.

Now, would I be as you have described if I did to an appearance rebuild? Probably. To be honest, I get the most joy when I am off fishing by myself, so I will probably always orient myself to boats that serve that purpose. One thing I learned quick is if you make the boat ugly, limit the amount of seats, and get rid of carpeting, no one wants to go with you anyway. I still get asked on occasion, but I just remind them that it is a fishing boat, and they give up. You are right though, because my hull already has a million dings and scratches, I could care less if I bump the dock. I know, deep in my soul, that if I had a new boat I would be horribly anal until I acrued enough dings to no longer worry about it...

I restored my boat to be more functional than beautiful. It's a 1971 fishing boat! I changed seats reupohlstered the cabin add this & that until it was what it is. It's a nice boat that I don't worry about getting fish guts all over.

I gotta admit, the Baja in my signature is a museum piece and I am a little uptight about it... I don't allow shoes in it, I'm awefully cautious around the docks, I wipe all of the water beads off immediately after hauling it out of the lake. But at the same time I try to remember that I bought it to use and enjoy and when it gets scuffed and banged it's just patina, character, history.

Ditto to JasonJ. I went for function not overall beauty. Fortunately the interior of my boat was constructed in a manner that has withstood the test of time, so even 'un-restored' it is presentable.

For those that followed my resto, there were obviously areas that I went the extra mile to make pretty, but it was for durability and in areas that didn't experience the normal people usage wear.

I was aware of the pitfalls of a pristine resto, as CalicoK describes, so I did not include that in my planning.

You could have fooled me Boomyal, that's a damn nice boat you've got there. The only diference is you restored yours to that condition while considering your needs, and I got lucky enough to find a virtually unused vintage (well, an '88) boat that I fell in love with and just had to address the weaknesses. If I had put in that much work I'd get uptight about people looking at it the wrong way.

Ah, the fish guts, oyster bar scrapes, spilled beer, small wieghts and hooks stuck in the crannies, faint smell of fish and bait from the live well, aluminum colored skeg instead of painted black...Better now then when we finished her!

Kinda like that first new car. Sort of anal about it to start. But after a few of the inevitable bumps and dings, you get over it. Then you can enjoy it. :D

Dave..

I don't know. I'm on my 4th restoration in the past year. It started with one. One ebay boat, that I picked up for 300 bucks. I thought I was restoring one, to use. I did my best. Nothing perfect, but when it was finished, I didn't even want to use it. I loved restoring that boat. I've loved restoring every single one. As soon as I'm finished, though, I sell them and look for something else. It isn't because I wanted to go bigger. I went bigger with the 2nd one. I like the results, more than anything, so I went smaller again(faster results). The last two have been little aluminum boats. I love doing it, but the most I've used a boat is twice, and then it was gone. And I'm really not making any more than my investment back. I'm thinking of seeking counseling, at this point. :)

Re: Do you enjoy boating as much after restoration?

You know, this is the same scenario I see with bikes all the time. Guys will spend $80,000 to build a beatiful, sometimes functional bike, and never ride it. A trailer queen. They take it to shows, show it off, but some never even start them (blues the pipes). Unless you have an unlimited supply of money, why would you do this? Same thing with a boat. Why spend ALL that money to restore and customize and then be anal about it? I understand JasonJ's point (about people wanting to reep the benefits of your hard labour), but to be anal about what you and your family do to the boat, or do with the boat shouldn't be a part of the equation. If you think about it, they ALL had a hand in it (maybe not physical), so why not enjoy it?

I know my boat isn't done yet, still looks ugly and has some things I want to do, but even then when people ask me about it I can say with pride that I did something most people wouldn't think of. Not only that but I personalized it. Same thing with my bike, a lot of people ask me why I ride it, why it isn't in shows. Well the best show I can put it in is riding down the street and seeing all the kids eyes get wide looking at it, all the elderly people looking at it, normally shy people stop me on the street just to look at it. All the while I get to enjoy the ride. No one else cares that there are a few blemishes on it, it's unique and different. Same thing goes with boats. Put your twist on it, or restore it to prestine condition. Use it, enjoy it and show it off with your head held high, and if you do scratch it or ding it, spend the time to fix it. That's what this game should be all about. :)

Sorry if it was a bit of a rant, just my take on it all. Life's too short to worry about this kind of stuff :)

EDIT: Yes I DO enjoy boating even MORE after the work I've done to it!!

Re: Do you enjoy boating as much after restoration?

Get it dirty, no big deal. Scratch it and I am having a bad day. The wife has been begging to go crabbing with those metal traps for years. We haven't gone yet. Also I have a never ending list of things I cant afford to do so when I get something right and it brakes or get scratched I feel like I am taking a step back. When you put that much time, money and love into something it almost becomes like a child in a way and just like my kids. Dirty, no problem, scratched or broken, problem.
Not saying having a beater is a bad thing. If you have the room, money and time for it.

I can relate to this.

Once my restoration was finished (cosmetic) I was so anal you have no idea. The first 20 times I took it out I scrubbed it from top to toe then rinsed it then shammied it then polished the fittings then vacuumed it, then cleaned the windows, thne took a fine eye to it and got out the turpintine to get rid of any specs or blemishes.

WOW! I remember it used to take me 2 hrs to clean it.

Now I hit it with a high pressure water hose, shammie the seats and interior down, and it comes up a treat.

cheers

Re: Do you enjoy boating as much after restoration?

I've done a number a "restorations" which means getting it mechanically and structurally perfect. Usually also means leaving the faded and scratched gelcoat as-is and just globbing some liquid vinyl on various seats to prevent existing flaws from getting worse.

I HATE going out on other friends' boats when they are always like "OOOOH, take your shoes off! Don't step on the seats! Don't rub the ski's fin on the upholstery it might tear it! Get the bumper so I don't get a wood scuff at the dock! Knock the sand off your feet! Careful with that anchor chain! Don't spill! Stand back there on the swim platform and drip off before you enter! and my ever favorite on the trailer at the end of the day...Here's a towel, could you help me wipe it down so my precious boat doesn't get water spots?!

Sorry dudes if some some of you are like that. I don't mean to offend, but mark my words... your guests absolutely hate it, but they tolerate it because boating is a rare treat for some.

So when guests come on my boat I highly ENCOURAGE getting mud & sand on your shoes, spilling your pop and beer, hitting the dock without bumpers at "gentle" ramming speeds, smoking as long as your butts stay in the boat, not the lake (and yes, I am a non-smoker), leaning the ski fins on the upholstery, hopping out of the lake soaking wet and dripping all over the seats, and slapping it on the trailer dripping wet and allowing those vicious water spots to land where they may. When someone does make an accidental scratch, muddy footprint, or spill, I laugh it off and usually make another one just like it myself to make my guest feel at ease. BOATING IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN, NOT SITTING THERE IN ANAL FEAR! And as a boat owner with guests, my primary responsibility is 1. SAFETY of my guests, and 2. MAKING DURN SURE MY GUESTS HAVE AN ABSOLUTE BLAST at ANY EXPENSE!

When I get home, I vaccuum and wipe down the interior for everyone's comfort next time around, do a safety check, slap on a little liquid vinyl on any new damage, and put it away. And I wouldn't have it any other way. I LOVE boating with my friends...slobs or not.

Incidentally, I'm going to be dropping almost $26K on my first brand new boat REAL soon, a Rinker 192. And I WILL treat it exactly the same way. In fact I think I'll break it in for my guests' sake IMMEDIATELY after we launch it for the first time by gently dragging it against a dock in hopes of scuffing the side and tearing a decal. It'll make my guests feel comfortable by taking the fear away of them possibly creating the first flaw.

Remember everyone, hearses don't have trailer hitches! ;)

I can't see spending a lot of time and money on a rebuild and not using the boat to its fullest and enjoying it. I spent at least 4 years and tens of thousands rebuilding my Formula and I use it to its fullest. I figure, at this point, I know the boat better than anyone on the Planet and can fix anything that breaks. And I find each time out, few and fewer things break. That's how you learn to bulletproof things...

I couldnt agree more. My boat isnt a pristine piece of art but if it was I dont think i'd change my ways... My attitude is if you got it pristine once, you can do it again. I used to go out iwth one of my relatives in his speedy jet boat and no matter how much fun it was, if he got some drippings inside or a scratch from a dock we spent time immediately cleaning it up or rubbing and inspecting the depth of the scratch... puts a damper on the trip worrying about what might happen next that you have to feel bad about.

Thats where the saying "sh!t happens" comes from... a scratch = polish later... not bring down the fun. Gotta keep the ut oh's in your head and grin.

I understand your point of view craz1cars, but......

WOW! you'll part with 26K to buy a new boat, to go out a deliberatly damage it on the first day?
Why buy a new boat, save some cash and buy a damaged one already????

Do you go out and buy a new car, then before you drive it out of the yard, run your key along the side of it????? Nah...I'm not nearly as dumb as I look ;) ...I was exaggerating a bit just to make a point. But when the new boat comes in and it ends up getting it's first accidental flaws, I will definitely laugh it off and continue to love life.

But your carpet comment actually did hit home and make me chuckle. I have a large annual bonfire party each fall with 40 to 80 people (coming up soon!). There's constant traffic from the fire under the walnut trees (which create serious carpet stains) going to the bathrooms, kitchen, living room, etc. Nobody takes their shoes off, everyone has a blast, and a few beers inevitably get spilled. I got new carpet 2 years ago, and I'm proud to say that NOTHING changed with regard to the party. My annual phonecall continues to go out to the carpet cleaners the day after the party, and they clean it up the best they can. It's just the price of having fun.

And the hearse won't fit my carpet either when I'm gone, so it's all good! :D

Re: Do you enjoy boating as much after restoration?

My boat wasn't usable until I restored it. At first I was afraid of everything and anything getting too close for fear of scratched, dents, etc. But after a season of washing and waxing, I have relaxed a lot. It still gets washed and waxed, but not to the extent as last year. I don't worry about wear and tear so much, because I know it got there from being used. And the fun and memories we have from using it more than makes up for normal wear and tear.

I will still have a cow if some drunk or careless boater damages it.

Hey, maybe in 15 years my kids will want to restore it again.
