You may find my analogy to be a bit crude, if so, i do apologise,i mean to offend none, but it is my belief that humans are to the earth as a flea is to a dog, after all when one gets to the bottom line, the basic fact remains that we are revered for the time being as the earth most dominant parasite.

I agree that we take the Earth for granted, but not to the extent that we used to when the earth was stripped of resources with no thought to replacement. This is where many of our family fortunes of today came from. Just in my adult lifetime working for a natural resources company, there has been a tremendous turn-a-around in practice. We're nowhere near where we should be, but hopefully, we'll continue to improve. I'm speaking of the US, of course. A trip to Korea, China, etc. will show just the opposite. They have no regard for the environment if it costs profits for their industry.

We use the earths resources, and thats what they
are there for. Some say we should stay out of
the forests. They are there for the animals.Crap!
The resources are for everyone. Not just the bugs
and the tree hugers. Should we take them for
granted, of course not. The earth is our home
if we keep it clean and spend it wisely there is
no problem.

Do we take the earth for granted?? Do we ever!!Our entire way of thinking puts us as the dominant species that is to rule the earth. There are only about 5 billion too many of us and we talk of the need too share the resources, while destroying our own habitat (the planet)through grotesk over population. In fact we are the chief reason for most ills that we are discovering about the earth each day.Would any other species act different?I doubt it
But the planet has been around for a few billion years, and I have the feeling that the human race will soon enough self destruct into a population implosion and the natural balance of earth will re-establish itself

Yes we as a people take the Earth for granted and act as though there is no end to what we can take and use and discard. Its hard to restrain oneself from falling into addictive consumerism and a disposable lifestyle. I'm pleasantly surprised to see at least the realization among so many people, on a boat board of all places, that we are perhaps not living wisely with regards to our only home. I'm one of those conservationist types, I'm afraid the coming generations are going to have a wasteland of a planet to live on.

Rolmops, what a perceptive observation you have.
They are my exact thoughts, but i often wonder,as we charge full speed ahead into oblivion, what species will we leave behind if any at all?

For all of those out there who say we abuse the earth and its natural resources and act like you don't, I've got a little reality check for you. The boat, motor and trailer you own (some of you multiples of those) are all unnecessarily taken out of our environment for recreational purposes only, thus it isn't a need.

For you to get on here owning all of the recreational equipment you do and say that we abuse the earth, maybe you should stop watching TV, stop driving your car, stop buying boats and planes. After all, they are all recreational vehicles that are unnecessary, right?

What? You say you don't want to give up everything you own to "return to nature?" Well neither do I. Just because we drive a car, fly a plane, drive a boat, etc etc doesn't mean we are abusing the earth.

For all of you who put all kinds of philosophical spins on everything think about this...you sure didn't consider the earth whenever you bought your boat right? Well then don't act like you are considering it now.

Oh yea, and statistically most of you drive gas guzzling SUV's. So don't feed me any of this "I care about the earth" bullcrap.

Environmental wackos are just that.

Kenny, 7of9 is a character on Star Trek Voyager, she is supposed to be 1/2 Borg, and 1/2 Human.

Let me tell ya, she is ALL beautiful!!!!

btw, she is played by Jeri Ryan, (heck, someone on this site had to tell me her name).

Statistically, most of us are idiots too. :p

somethinginthefuel

take a break, step back. nobody is pointing fingers. nobody here said everyone else is abusing the planet, we all admit it....'cept you.

one fact remains....the planet will outlast us in some form or another. it was here before us, it will be here after us.

we are a self-destructive species. and, despite all our clever ways to use the resources that are available, most of the plants and animals around us are better at survival than we are and will also outlast us.....because they are subject to the balances of nature that we exploit.

Hello there waterinthefuel,I am a bit perplexed at you having come to the conclusion that fingers are being pointed by "environmental wackos".
I do not consider myself to be an environmentlist in the least, since my consumption and methods of disposal of manufactured products,as you so eloquently mentioned are indeed contrary to that of your diagnosed "environmental wacko".
Perhaps you may not have read my first post in this topic, however, when all is said and done the remaining fact is,unequivocally none other than human beings have scarred and polluted planet earth for the procurement of comfort and longevity as a specie to live and flourish without equal.
