I'm somewhat disappointed that I don't see boats with the flag mounted on the stern, as was normal when I was younger.
I mounted two soft plastic suction cups to the center of the stern after drilling out the holes a little to fit the staff from an old car antenna I had lying around.
It worked out just right and now I can proudly unfurl Old Glory whenever I hit the water.

Anyone else?

I know that lots of boaters like to fly the American flag on their boats, but I recall from a USPS boating course that it not legal unless you are a documented or military vessel. It may also be a problem in a Canadian harbor.

Let's see what other have to say ?

Nothing wrong or illegal about flying the US flag. Perhaps what you are remembering is the flying of an ensign (the blue field has a ring of stars around an anchor). Nothing illegal about that either, though proper etiquette does reserve the ensign for documented vessels.

Boating has its traditions. If you don't fly a flag you are not a boatman, just another schmukk with a boat.

PS - if you don't fly a flag at your house, you're just a schmukk!!

The port side bimini support has one too. Two flags, is there extra credit considered here? Oh yeah, one US flag on the house too!

Sadly no and no plans to on my current boat. It is too small and it would not work out well

I understand that country of registry is flown on port stern side and to shown respect when visiting another country, is to fly their flag on the bow.

I always fly the Canadian flag on my stern and the US flag on my bow.

I try to fly the NC flag on my boat but I have forgotten to put it up from time to time.

My little 14' tinny has a flag on the stern AND a bow pennant. Size is no excuse and anything works well if you want it to.

I run two pirate flags, one pretty ratty like me, one pink for the lady.

Posting the colors and retrieving them is part of rigging and de-rigging every time (daylight and weather permitting). Kinda' like putting the plug in ('cept we do that no matter the weather or time of day ;))

US flag at the stern whenever we are on board and usually a Pirate flag from the antenna.
