Re: Do you grease/oil the ball?

I grease the goosneck balls on my 1ton trucks. The tongue weight on the loaded stock trailers we pull is some where around 4000lbs, so it has alot of friction there. On my bumper hitch stuff, I use a moly chain lube (less mess). On the goosneck the greasy ball is either in a coupler or closed up in the well, so the mess doesn't matter.

Definitely lube the hitch ball, but if your getting a lot of gouging on the ball, maybe you need to take a closer look at the coupler, there may be rust or dirt in there that's causing the excessive wear too. Also, make sure the tounge of the latch isn't adjusted too tight.

I grease it and put a ball cover on it when not on use. Have done this for over 30+ years and haven't had a problem yet.Have you ever put your hand on the hitch right after towing,it gets hot enough to burn you so whats it going to the ball and hitch?

I first cleaned of any grease and then sprayed on all the components with Dupont's Teflon Silicone Lubricant. About $5 for a 10 oz spray can at Home Depot.
About $10 for a 2 oz tiny spray can at a bike store.

I keep a can in the trunk and spray the ball a little before each trip. Takes out the sqeaks too.

I find WD 40 attracts road grease and grime. I've been using this Teflon stuff on my bike components like the chain, derailleur etc. after the bike shop said not to use WD 40 on it.

It's clear and does not glob off on your clothes when brushing against the ball or coupling

The only thing I use grease on the trailer are the bearing savers and the third wheel jack as they all have Zerk fittings.

My chrome ball was from U-haul and it's lost some chrome cause it's a cheapo probably made in China.

I'm going to spring for a stainless one too. Can't stand to look at "Rusty Old Balls" :D

I have a Stainless Steel convert-a-ball set. I wipe off the ball after each use when I store them away.....then just put a small dab on the ball before I put the coupler on the next time.

wow, this has gotten quite a few replies for what I originally thought was a silly question!

thanks for all the input. I applied a little gear oil to the ball and inside the coupler.
